Folder & List Export

Currently, when I export a Folder or List in BaseCamp, the result is always a single GPX file with with every track, waypoint, route, etc. from the selected File or Folder included.

I like to maintain each of my routes, waypoints and tracks independently, and currently, the only way I can export them individually is to select them individually, and export one at a time. Very time consuming.

FALAGAR, could you please ask the BaseCamp software engineers if they might add an export option to allow the user to choose single GPX or Individual GPX files?

I would very much like to be able to select a Folder or List, select export, and have BaseCamp output individual files for each waypoint, track and route in the selected data group.

Thank You!

You may be the only one who has this requirement.

You could use a dummy list and send an item to the list, export the list, remove the item from the list and then send the next item to the list, and so on. It would be tedious for you but would not distract the development team from much more useful activities.

Saving each individual data source in smaller separate GPX files should be no more trouble than compiling them all into one larger GPX file. Actually, since they are all separate to begin with, not combining them may be faster.

But, hey, thanks for suggesting your needs are more important than mine.
  • I'm struggling to see why you feel the need to save every waypoint, track, route etc as individual GPX files? You can of course already save anything as an individual file should you so wish, although I admit that it's tedious if you have a lot to do :)

Rather than use the 'Export' function if I have an individual file to save I simply use 'Send to' and save it to a USB stick.

For example, I give every GPX a meaningful name.

When I am away from home, and I want to move GPX information in/out of the GPX directory on my Montana, if all data is stored in a single GPX file, I am very limited in my options.

Also, Send To Device is still a file by file process. Simply selecting a folder or list and having the option to export the COMPLETE folder or list to individual GPX files is a very simple request.

Frankly, I am struggling to understand why others are having so much trouble with my personal request?

Really? I assume you hook it up to a PC? Basecamp then allows you to do this surely

Yes, REALLY. Of course I am using a host computer to move files as needed, but none of the public use computers I have used included a BaseCamp installation, nor would they allow me to install BaseCamp, so I have been limited to manipulating the data I have on my Montana and uSD card already.

Why are you being so narrow minded?

We are definitely investigating different export formats. One limitation at the moment is e.g. that there is no good way to export your folder and list structure. This information gets stripped out when saving as gpx and gdb. Being able to share structured data with friends without having to use Backup/Restore might be useful.

I have to admit I don't see a feature that allows the user to export into individual files for each data item as being terribly useful for the majority of users. So I don't see this happening.

Sorry, not intending to be, just trying to get to the bottom of your problem and offer help. Now I see your problem :)

I can't remember now which version it was, but for a brief time BC would read the favorites from my nuvi and display them in a folder with lists equivalent to the categories on the nuvi, and in sending them back the lists were converted back to categories. I'm hoping that 2 way process will be brought back, as it allows users to back up their data from their GPS, manipulate it in BC and send it back still split into categories. So at some stage BC could at least export the list/folder structure

That wasn't exactly the same as this only worked for waypoints (we equate lists with waypoint categories). We'll see if we can get that functionality back, but it really hasn't got much to do with list/folder export.
