Folder & List Export

Currently, when I export a Folder or List in BaseCamp, the result is always a single GPX file with with every track, waypoint, route, etc. from the selected File or Folder included.

I like to maintain each of my routes, waypoints and tracks independently, and currently, the only way I can export them individually is to select them individually, and export one at a time. Very time consuming.

FALAGAR, could you please ask the BaseCamp software engineers if they might add an export option to allow the user to choose single GPX or Individual GPX files?

I would very much like to be able to select a Folder or List, select export, and have BaseCamp output individual files for each waypoint, track and route in the selected data group.

Thank You!
  • Oh OK, understand. Would certainly be useful though to get the categories to lists and lists to categories feature back again :)
  • We are definitely investigating different export formats. One limitation at the moment is e.g. that there is no good way to export your folder and list structure. This information gets stripped out when saving as gpx and gdb. Being able to share structured data with friends without having to use Backup/Restore might be useful.

I have to admit I don't see a feature that allows the user to export into individual files for each data item as being terribly useful for the majority of users. So I don't see this happening.

    Thank you for your input.

Any user can already select each data item individually and export it as a single file.

All I am asking is add a single line of code to BaseCamp that allows each selected data item to be saved individually when exporting.

A simple macro in BaseCamp code that says to itself, "Hey I already have the capability to export each data item as an individual GPX, and I see the user has selected XX number of items, I will now PRETEND the user has selected each individually, and export each of them individually, until all the selected data items have been exported."

Really, a single line of code.

    So simple.
  • Of course I am using a host computer to move files as needed, but none of the public use computers I have used included a BaseCamp installation, nor would they allow me to install BaseCamp, so I have been limited to manipulating the data I have on my Montana and uSD card already.

Why are you being so narrow minded?

You may want to take a copy of BaseCamp with you, as a portable application, for those occasions when you do not have access to a host computer with BaseCamp already installed. There is an excellent post on the ADVRider site that describes the process of storing a copy of BaseCamp on your Montana's µSD card.

I know this thread is a little old, but I hit it when trying to find the answer to the same question as BABJ615. I agree that it's frustrating that BaseCamp won't export multiple files when you select multiple options. For me the work-around was to exit BaseCamp and switch my 60CSx into USB Mass Storage mode. I can then see and copy all the individual track files in a folder of the "external drive" that the Garmin shows up as. Don't know whether you can do the same thing with the Montana though.

Actually this would be an enormously helpful feature for collaborative work I am doing here for native forest conservation in Haiti. I've been dreaming of this feature for years. As part of the work here, I teach locals to use BC and it's such a great program because it's highly useful without being overly complicated. (And even better, it's available in French.)

But back to the point, having a way to maintain the List Folder / List / Track architecture would be a great help to sharing data when I am not on site.

That said, I can understand if the GPX format simply does not accommodate this. I wonder if there could be another tool, something like a mini BC library. Basically a BC book bag. It doesn't contain the entire BC library, but it can be exported and imported with the structure intact. Just a thought.
  • Yes, I would like this feature also.

The previously suggested method of exporting to USB works but lists each file as Track.gpx, Track1.gpx, Track2.gpx and so on which is un-usable for independant external file management or alternative gps's.

The purpose is to not only archive these gpx files as originally named/ structured but primarily to be able to use them in other geo apps. For instance I would like to easily migrate all my individual trip gpx files to OSMAnd running on my phone. This gives me the capability to work on trip planning when I'm not able to do so on the laptop. Additonally it acts as a backup or for running dual gps while on the ride.

thank you, i've been searching for days to export tracks recorded on my Montana through basecamp but couldn't find any solution. your method works for me, just look in c:/garmin/tracks/archive folder to locate the .gpx files i want to export.
  • Not sure why you're having an issue exporting multiple files, just highlight all the ones you wish to send then right click and select 'send to' ...

I'm late into this but searching for an answer to the OP bought me here. I too find it irksome not to be able to export multiple tracks and the reason is I like to use sites that offer better editing facilities than BC. They usually require tracks of a certain length so one large track, say over 500 points, will be stripped down to a level where it cant be reasonably edited. But as the OP is from 2012 I dont think it's going to happen. At least I now know!
  • You can export and import multiple tracks, I do it all the time. How are trying to do so?
