4.0.5 is a quick maintenance release to fix 2 issues related to folder selection. This release also re-fixes an issue with find toolbar visibility not being remembered.

You can download it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435, or update from within BaseCamp.

The problem is not your browser(s).

Garmin doesn't have a single server but multiple ones. The issue is that these servers aren't always synchronized correctly and on any given visit you may reach an out of date one.

I've seen this myself over the past week. Sometimes the page at

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp

shows 4.0.5 and other times only 4.0.4.

Just keep trying or use the direct download link.

And FALAGAR needs to whack the website people--again.

  • That's what happens when you ask two questions in one post

The more relevant issue of not being able to delete items on older devices (like my oregon300) won't see much focus. It has been discussed several times before and yes the standard answer is that the older gps cant do it. But the much easier fix for garmin to implement would be to allow deletion of several waypoints on the gps itself!

What is also possible (at least on my oregon) is to delete ALL waypoints in the system/reset menu. Maybe that could help you here. You can still add back those you really need later.
    Cheers
  • With all due respect, this is yet another perfect example of Garmin not understanding their own products, or the people who use them. Epic Fail.

Here is yet another example of Garmin Tech Support Incompetence. These reports are not singular, but widespread.

I'm one of Garmin's harshest critics when it comes to the total lack of coordination of development and no standardization of even the most basic stuff. However...

I agree with a couple of earlier posts that perhaps some Garmin customers need to spend a bit of time learning how to use their devices if they want more than the most basic functions.

On the specific point of the motorcycle shops, if it was that easy for those to be added by one of the cycle shops my bet is that if the original poster looks on his device he will find the POI.GPI file of custom POIs were placed there by that cycle shop. And he can get rid of them by simply deleting that POI.GPI file. Or maybe they named it "[something-else].GPI". In any case, he should look on the device for a *.GPI file. If it's there, delete it and the custom POIs are gone.

I also agree that if those two motorcycle chains wanted to be in Garmin's official maps they could do so quite easily. They probably just don't want to pay for the priviledge. It's great that they make them available at the shops. If you can find the shop in the first place. :-)

Adding another example to the long list of Garmin Customer Support failures.... :(

I would say it's the opposite, Garmin users not understanding the product. If you want to add specialist POIs to your Garmin you can, and delete them just as easily. You can hardly blame Garmin for not having every single POI that some users might want, and I'm sure if Polo and Louis wanted their POIs in the Garmin POI list they could arrange it :)

Probably I do not understand yet this product, as it is my first Garmin GPS.
On the other hand I usually find pretty easy my way around computers (like... servers, routers, storages...) and gadgets... probably because my job is asking me to do this.
Look, I am stupid this time, I do not know everything, so I am asking you - can you please write for us here a short stupid-proof manual on how to add these specialist POIs and delete them *easily*?

As for the other matter - I don't get it either, why wouldn't Polo and Louis want to have their shops included in Garmin maps? Whatever reason it may be, I'd say Garmin is on the losers' side this time for not doing it.
  • If you want to learn about POIs then a good starting point is here:

    http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.htm#poiintro

As for Polo and Louis, it really is nothing to do with Garmin, as Polo and Louis could ask/pay for their outlets to be included. Clearly they haven't bothered.

    Hello JONLUP,

As SUSSAMB said, commercial map products like Garmin and TomTom and Magellan are kind of like telephone Yellow Pages. You have to pay to have your company POI included directly in the maps. Many companies feel that they get most of their value from a service like Google Maps and do not feel it is worth it to pay for the other commercial map products.

If they have a web site they could easily post POI files in the most common file formats. They could also include them at POI sites like POI Factory like many companies do. These options would be free and still make their locations available for GPS users. Or you could post those POIs at POI Factory to share with your fellow riders. (I ride a BMW F650GS and love it!!)

The tutorial that SUSSAMB posted for creating POIs is comprehensive. It covers everything you could possibly want to do with custom POIs. And there are many things you can do with them! But it makes it seem a little more complicated than it really is if you only want the very basics.

If you just want to put the name and location of some places like motorcycle shops or gas station locations that matter to you, it is really quite simple. If you go to ">this page">this page that is also referenced in SUSSAMB's link, you will find useful links to tell you the pieces you really want to know. Then, if you still need an excellent step-by-step tutorial for your particular use(s) you can go back to the tutorial that SUSSAMB linked and you will be able to tell which parts to follow and which parts you can skip.

Specifically, to get started you may only need to read the "Creating Custom POI Files" link in the Help box at the lower right side of the Garmin POILoader page. But if you want more information about all the things you can use custom POI files for you can see all the other reference links down the right side of that page.

After reading Garmin's pages and the tutorial, if you have more questions there is a POILoader section on this forum under the Windows Software section. Some of us check that section, too.

    Enjoy.

    Don't hijack threads!

    Hi,
I didn't really read any Garmin forums before posting this, ....
    {snip}

IMHO this thread, originally a release notes post, was hijacked.
It would have been *much better* had JONLUP created a new thread about POI management instead of posting it here. More people would have noticed it - both those who could contribute to that topic and those who could learn. Too much useful information gets buried in threads whose topic is not related.
