4.0.5 is a quick maintenance release to fix 2 issues related to folder selection. This release also re-fixes an issue with find toolbar visibility not being remembered.

You can download it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435, or update from within BaseCamp.

Fixed issue when changing list or folder selection with nearest results shown on the map.
Fixed issue when changing list or folder selection while in the process of drawing a route.

    Hi,
I didn't really read any Garmin forums before posting this, so any info would help.

I have a HUGE problem with this BaseCamp.
My opinion is that it is REALLY NEEDED to allow BC to edit info directly in the GPS device itself - add/edit/delete points/routes/whatever.
Not all users are stupid and not all need to be prevented to destroy their data.
Maybe there're other reasons to not allow this, but I can't really see any.

    Another reason to allow this?
    I have a zumo 660.
I went through Germany/Austria/Switzerland on the motorcycle.
Garmin, in the "City Navigator Europe NT 2013.1" map, doesn't have as POIs any of the Polo or Louis shops.
Why the largest chains of motorcycle items shops in Germany are not as POIs in the map I can't really understand.
Anyway, the guys at Louis and Polo proved to be smarter than Garmin - they provided a downloadable file with all their shop locations ready to be installed on different GPSes, not only Garmin.
This was EXTREMELY USEFUL in my trip as I needed urgently some things for my motorcycle.
Now, as I have finished my trip, I no longer need these waypoints.
Garmin, they are one or two hundred of these shops (which you failed to provide in the map as POIs)!
I want to get rid of them from my device.
I don't see any other way than removing them one by one from the zumo itself. Wouldn't be very smart of you to provide such a feature as adding / editing / deleting them on a normal computer screen instead a 4inch touch screen??
Ok, adding is simple, create them in the library on the computer and upload on the device.
WHY NOT the other way around?

I hope I am making any sense here... the bottom line: BC really needs to allow editing data stored in the GPS itself.
I have an SD card in, but I don't think I was offered a choice of where to load that file with POIs (I might be mistaking here, I don't really remember the exact steps of loading those POIs).

    Kind Regards,
    John.
  • BaseCamp actually can edit info directly on certain devices, but not on the zumo 660. It will never get that possibility, and that is caused by the way the zumo 660 works. When you transfer waypoints/routes/tracks to the zumo, the data is stored in an intermediate file. The zumo reads that data from the file, and stores it in an internal memory that is unaccessible from outside. When you delete all gpx files on the device, the waypoints and routes are still present in the menu.
So, the only way to delete them is on the device itself.

Why the POI's of Polo and Louis aren't part of the map I don't know, maybe they didn't want to pay to get on the map...

There is a better solution though. Next time when you want to add a large bunch of POI's don't send them as waypoints, but instead use Garmin POI Loader to put them on the device. This way it doesn't clutter up the waypoint menu (POI's are accessible through Where to > Extras), and there is virtually no limit to the amount of POI's you can store on the device.
When you want to get rid of them, it is just a matter of deleting one gpi file from the device.

I'm not familiar with the 660, but some units allow the deletion of waypoints by symbol as well as name....if the 660 does it will save you lots of time, assuming the waypoints referred to in your post have the same symbol.

    Hi,
    Thanks for that.
    It is VERY dissapointing.
Is there any reasons why this was designed / built this way?
    I don't see any (but I don't know everything).
I paid a lot of money for this thing and this limitation looks only like a joke, a very bad one.

Maybe Garmin could find a workaround?

That's just another bad joke if you ask me.
I really don't understand this - why put on the market a so-called high-end GPS device for motorcyclists and you do not put in the huge list of POIs some basic stuff for the guys to which you market the device?
Polo and Louis are huge chains of stores, they're not the convenience store around the block.

Anyway this problem and probably many other problems can be worked around by allowing this direct edit of the data that's in the internal memory of the device.
It works to do that on the SD card inside and I'm very happy with that.

    Cheers,
    J.

With all due respect, this is yet another perfect example of Garmin not understanding their own products, or the people who use them. Epic Fail.
  •

I would say it's the opposite, Garmin users not understanding the product. If you want to add specialist POIs to your Garmin you can, and delete them just as easily. You can hardly blame Garmin for not having every single POI that some users might want, and I'm sure if Polo and Louis wanted their POIs in the Garmin POI list they could arrange it :)

I will have to agree. On my Zumo 660 I have a user POI file containing separate files for all BMW dealers, all Louis shops, all campsites i Western Europe plus a bunch of private stuff like adresses of friends and family, favorite meeting places etc. Things that I don't want to clutter my waypoint list but still be easily accessible.

So, reading this thread, I would say that Garmin's failures are along the lines of their device people not working with the software people, or even with other device people.... the lack of any "standardization" on the device side means that any software (basecamp, POI loader, etc) is going to behave differently in very nuanced and non-obvious ways. I believe THAT is the core problem, and is partly why the software folks cannot more tightly integrate all the different tools they create (e.g. poi loader, custom waypoint symbol creator/loader, map-install, should all be included as automatic/seamless functions in what I'd call "Basecamp/Mapsource/trip-planner").
