Waypoints not showing on GPS

I don't know if this is in the right section and sorry if it ain't. I am pretty new to Basecamp. I have a RINO 650 GPS and it will not show any waypoints but when I plug into laptop using Basecamp all the waypoints show up on the left under internal storage. How do I get them back into GPS or turn waypoints back on in GPS or send back to GPS. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for all your help!

Could it be that you have the Waypoint Zoom level at a low level, so they won't show up until zoomed to like 100ft? I'm not sure about the Rhino, but my GPS's have a separate zoom level setting just for waypoints. You didn't say whether they just don't show on the map or they don't show under Find all waypoints.

If the waypoint show up normally in Basecamp under internal storage and you can click on them and get the info, the files must be there in the GPS. Did you have any waypoints in the Rhino before you got BaseCamp and they did show up? Can you save a waypoint in the Rhino using Mark Waypoint and have it show up?

Curious, maybe some senior member will chime in.

The answer is yes to all the above. Yes it seems as basecamp does pick up all the correct info out of GPS but GPS just won't show it. I can make a waypoint and it shows up and works just like it is suposed to. Seems like a GPS issue to me. I updated RINO to latest software today but no luck.

So any waypoints you create on the GPS show normally, ALL waypoints in the unit show up and can be read in BC, but NO waypoints sent to the GPS from BC show on the GPS map or in Find Waypoints?

I think you should call Garmin Support: 1-800-800-1020

I've never heard of this one before, but I'm FAR from being a Garmin GPS expert, even after 25 years of GPS experience...

I'm no longer sure such a human exists!!

Thanks for the info guys! Played with GPS and Basecamp this morning and tried manualy installing cordinates to see if they would show up. The cordinates I put in manualy worked fine. Then for whatever reason all my waypoints showed up on GPS. Have no idea what happened just really happy they came back because I did not want to enter them all in manualy. Must have been some glitch as I never changed any settings. Anyways thanks for the help!
  • Wow. Wish you could explain that, might help others in future.

I have heard that sometimes a 'delete GPX files/power off/power on GPS/reload GPX files' can work in circumstances like this, and it worked on the one occasion I experienced with geocaches showing in BC but not on my Etrex 20. I have all my gpx files installed on a sd card, that way if it happens when I'm out I can remove the card, do a power off/power on cycle and then reinstall the card :)

I have heard that sometimes a GPX file will become corrupt, in which case the unit may not read it but BC might. On the Montana thread on ADVRider, in one particularly difficult case involving routes, it was recommended to erase all gpx files, then load one waypoint or route at a time and see if they show, until the faulty one is loaded and causes them all to disappear......(or the unit to crash).

This does not sound like what happened to the OP, since they just miraculously re-appeared! Hope this doesn't happen again. The recommended procedure may work in some of these cases and is easy to try. Or are there any big solar flares this week???:p

No waypoint button under "Where Too?"

This is what is happening to Me. This is what I did.

I used the receive button in BaseCamp to import the waypoints into BaseCamp. I put the waypoints in a folder that I named Hunting 2012.

I then deleted them from my GPS using Waypoint manager as they didn’t seem to delete form the my unit if I deleted them in BaseCamp. I didn’t think that I was going to use them again for a while and I was going to set up the unit for a different hiking area. Last night I decided that I wanted to go hunting again this weekend so started trying to get my hunting waypoints back on my 655T.

I selected Hunting 2012 then clicked the “Send to “ from one of the Menus then select “Send Hunting 2012 to” . I see the Internal Memory folder, under my units name, change to an icon with and yellow exclamation point then it goes to a green checkmark. If I then select the folder I can see the waypoints that I transferred, so I thought I was all set.

At this point I eject the GPS by right clicking and selecting eject. I then unplugged it and turn it on. From the menu screen of my 655T I select “Were To?” and Waypoints is no were in the list. I then went to Waypoint manager and I got a screen saying “No Results Found Try Adjusting Search Parameters”.

So I turned the unit off and plugged it back into my computer fired up BaseCamp and clicked on Receive from the menu bar. All of the waypoints down from the device just find to a new folder named the what ever the date and time was. So I checked it again and still had nothing.

I then sent you guy’s the email and I decided to try something else.

At this point I exported the file to a free software package I have been using for years with my Rino 130. It is called EasyGPS. I configured it for the 655T and clicked on the send button. I then ejected the unit, turned it on, went to “Where To?” and sure enough there was the waypoint button. Not all of the Symbols transfer the way I would have liked but at lease I could navigate to them were as with BaseCamp I couldn’t.

So my question is why did this happen and what can I do to get BaseCamp to work correctly.

Until now I really liked the software. It could use a few tweaks to make it easier but it seems to work well until this glitch.

I can send screen prints and pic’s if that would help but it would have to wait till get home to night.

I have an email into Garmin and I will let you know what I here back

    EYEOFRA_VT,

I apologize for the trouble. This is not a known issue, so I'll have to investigate. I do not have a 655T around here, I could only test with a 650 and didn't have any trouble with transferring waypoints with BaseCamp.

First, make sure your device's firmware is up-to-date. You can do that within BaseCamp, right-click on the device's internal storage, then choose 'Check for Device Software Update'. If updating the device doesn't fix things, I'd be interested in seeing the GarminDevice.xml file in the Rino's 'Garmin' folder. I'd also be interested where EasyGPS writes the gpx files to when it succeeds in transferring the waypoints.

Tested this again with a 650N with the 2.40 firmware, no issues.

For those that have the BaseCamp transfer fail, please attach the GarminDevice.xml file and the GPX file that BaseCamp writes the waypoints to. It should be in the Garmin\gpx folder on the device, probably the one with the newest time-stamp.

If this is indeed a BaseCamp issue, we will do our very best to fix it, but it's hard to fix something we cannot reproduce.

I talked to Tech support and they asked for Screen prints and pics if possible. So I went home and tried to reproduce the issue that I had had 20 times last night and for whatever reason it started working. I suspect that it was a mismatch of the files. When I overwrote the file using EasyGPS I believe that it unlatched the stuck bit creating the mismatch. If I had to guess I would say it was on the GPS side of the transfer or that BaseCamp was not activating the waypoint button. But that is just a guess.

Being in the computer business I should have know to document the problem as it was happening but it was late and I figure its happened 20 times now it will keep happening. Hopefully this will not come up again. If it does I will document as much as I can. Thanks for the quick response.
