New Basecamp not finding 100k Topos

If the map is listed under "map products" in Basecamp, try changing the "view detail" to a lower level. Basecamp appears to render maps a bit slower than Mapsource.

Alternatively, if there is an error with the map installation, you can verify the installation with a few free tools: JaVaWa (http://www.javawa.nl/) or Mapset Toolkit (https://sites.google.com/site/cypherman1/home)

Which Topo US do you mean? 2008 (on DVD) or the older ones on 3 CD's?

I have Topo US 100k (2008), but haven't used it since purchasing the Garmin 24k topo map for my area. It is installed however on both my desktop and netbook. On the desktop it is slow rendering, but on the netbook it will start to render only if I reduce the detail level from "highest", and then it is very slow.

If the map still doesn't render in BaseCamp, you may want to uninstall/reinstall the maps. Before reinstall, make sure that references to it are gone from your registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\MapSource\Families for 64bit machines or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families for 32bit machines.

Incidentally, an easy way to copy Garmin maps to another machine is to do a backup from the desktop using GMTK, then restore to the notebook using the same program. GMTK will copy everything needed including unlock codes.

I am using the old version that came on CDs. I bought it in 2000 when I bought my first unit, a Garmin III+.

These older Topos get the job done for me. They actually show a lot roads that do not show up in 24k Topos.

I thought about reinstalling it. But it seems like I would be using the same installation code that came with the maps and it would install it exactly the same way.

I still use Mapsource on the Notebook and it still sees the old 100k Topos properly.

I have a nearly identical setup on my desktop. I am not going to install the new BaseCamp there until I get this issue resolved on the Notebook.

I really think the problem is related to the Registry. I'll bet your Topos 2008 are in the Installed folder and this is the only place the new Basecamp is looking these days.

Edit: Oh BTW when I say that Basecamp is not seeing the 100k Topos I mean that they are not showing up in the drop down list of mapsets available. I do have my Detail level set at Highest.

I have the CD's as well but don't have those installed as Topo US 2008 (on DVD) installs as one map product vs the three separate (East/West/Alaska) with the v3.02 product. A single map product is much more convenient.

If the map products aren't in the drop down list then my guess is that BaseCamp doesn't support them (as you said MapSource does).

Edit: I'll try installing Topo US v3.02 then BaseCamp 4.0.1 into a virtual machine (VM) to see if I can replicate your issue.

BaseCamp does check the registry for MapSource map products, so they should show up unless they are corrupt or CD-based installs.

US Topo v3.02 is the only map product I know of that, by default, requires a CD be inserted to work.

I can confirm that BaseCamp 4.0.1 will NOT recognize US Topo v3.02 whether a CD is in the drive or not.

One workaround (haven't tried it) is to copy the contents of all 3 CD's to a folder on the HD and run the installer from there (not from CD). The CD's are then NOT required further so BaseCamp may recognize the maps.

I can confirm that it is possible to get US Topo v3.02 to work in BaseCamp.

1) Copy the entire contents of all 3 CD's to a folder on your HD. I chose C:\US Topo but the exact location will be where the maps reside so pick carefully.

2) Run Setup.exe in the folder you chose in 1).

3) Install BaseCamp v4.0.1

In my case BaseCamp crashed after 3) and I had to reboot the VM. After that it worked and the US Topo v3.02 maps were recognized.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I will try to reinstall both Topos and Basecamp 4.0.1.

For the record the 100k Topos worked fine in Basecamp 3.3.3.

And I still think there is a bug in the new Basecamp in that it is not looking in the right place in the Registry to find these maps.

I figured out several years ago how to get Mapsource and more recently Basecamp 3.3.3 to read the 100k Topo maps from a disc drive.

A friend told me to put all the CDs on the hard drive and then put the text z\garmin in the shortcut to the setup.exe file

This was a major improvement over having to install the CD each time.

And I still think there is a bug in the new Basecamp in that it is not looking in the right place in the Registry to find these maps.

I am 99% sure that is not the case, BaseCamp reads registry based maps just fine. We did drop support for CD based map installs.
