Ughhh ... really?

Ok ... so, all I want is to be able to plan routes on my pc, load them into my Zumo 660, stick it on my motorcycle and enjoy the road. I'm new to the Garmin world and have been workin on planning my first trip in BaseCamp for days ... Ughhh ... (did i mention that i have a degree in Computer Science?) .. this thing is frustrating me, making me feel stupid and I'm beginning to think that Garmin is like McAfee .. Do I need to be a Genius to make this thing work? Is it really full of glitches or am I missing the secret code? I've tried to call support (I'll PAY!!) - does anyone really work at Garmin? Ughhh ... I'm unwinding my 2012 technology mentality back to 1990 and figuring out that BaseCamp and the Zumo 660 really aren't friendly toward one another ... Just how do these algorythms work in the Zumo when they recalculate the "route" I created in BaseCamp? Sometimes they show up in my "Custom Routes" and sometimes I have to "Import" them ... and the one route that WILL NOT show up in Custom Routes ends up with 100 more miles on it after I import it ... but the route looks the same when I preview it... Ughhh ... my iPhone maps are much more intuitive .. but that's not what I bought the Garmin for ... HELP!! I'm LOST!!!!!

    Chris,

How about giving us an example of the routes you are struggling with. Say the coordinates of the start and end?

I have found that the "shorter" or "faster" selections you "have" to make can raise havoc with a route that simply uses the start and finish.

The "rubberband" mode will allow you to add more "vias" to your route to "make" the route go where you want.

I am aware that a lot of us that use basecamp and garmin gps devices have a lot of trouble getting the route to stay on the trail we want. The route will jump from trail to trail as you pass turnoffs, and I'm thinking that is because it thinks the other trail is "shorter" or "faster" based on what you set the preference at.

Give it a bit of thought and let us know if you have any luck. We're all here to share our experiences and help out!

    My Example

I think my issue is very similar to this posting so here goes. I have the Garmin 2555 using the BaseCamp to create my new route. I create a new folder and add a few waypoints to the folder. Then I create a new route - add the starting and ending point and then I add additional waypoints to the route and inserted additional points. All this works great. Now the issue arises when I don't want to stop at the intermediate waypoints or inserted points. So I click on the route then right mouse click on the properties. Then I right click on all the intermediate points and select "Don't Alert on Arrival (shaping point)". This implies to me that the point is only used to define the route and that I won't be stopping at that point. However, what is happening is the program is "forcing me" to arrive at the waypoints. It will not display the next waypoint or part of the route until I have reached the previous one point. I don't care about "arriving" at the intermediate points I just want the route and I cannot figure out how to get it to give me just the route, starting and ending points and the path that I defined.
  • I think that's an issue with your 2555, which uses 'trips' instead of the older Garmin 'routes' method. It appears to treat any shaping point as a point on the 'trip'. I don't know of anyway around it, other than to ditch your 2555 and buy an older model, the 14xx series works fine (I have a 1490).

    Really ?!

So you are saying my brand new (expensive) Garmin 2555 is not compatible with BaseCamp? The only reason that I bought this model is for the trip planning capability. So now are saying it doesn’t work? Would this be considered a bug in the BaseCamp program or a bug in the Garmin? Either way it seems that a fix in the software is warranted and not throwing my Garmin away for an older model. That really is not a good solution for me. So to get this addressed who do I contact for a resolution?
  • Not saying that at all, AFAIK it's working as it should, this is how Garmin's 'trip planner' works.

If you try to create a 'trip' on the GPS itself you'll get the same result, in that only the first leg of the trip will show until you reach the end of that leg, then the second leg shows and so on until the 'trip' ends. Garmin's earlier 'route planner' showed the whole route. Some claim the trip planner is an improvement, I don't and will be hanging on to my 1490 until it dies on me ;)

    Easy Rider

Well considering that I mount this on my motorcycle I don't plan to manually set the next leg of the trip while I am riding and I don't want to stop to set it. I had bought the 2555 so I can configure a nice ride through back roads plotting lots of points along the way. I had wanted to see all the route instead of piece meal. So I guess I now need to get an older model, they are still around. Thanks for the additional information.

    Can’t Keep Quiet

This issue that I would raise with the 2555 that not having the route planner (vs. trip planner) as in the previous models is a bug, it’s as simple as that. I write software for a living and anytime we put out upgrade we always make it backwards compatible, we never loose functionality we move to a newer version of the software. I can’t see how the community would tolerate losing functionality like this. It seems to me that it would be very simple to provide an option to make the waypoints stopping place or not. The functionality is in BaseCamp if you right mouse click, it was just ignored when the new software was released. If it quacks like a duck and it waddles like a duck then it is a duck. In this case it is a bug. I really object that I have to buy an older version of the product (after I bought a new version) to get the functionality that I should have gotten in the first place. I’ve said enough thanks again for letting me know which model I should purchase, it’s now on order.

On zumoforums.com we've got tutorials and quite a few motorcycle riders that use the Zumo with either BaseCamp or the older MapSource programs. Once you get through the tutorial at http://garmin-mapsource.wikispaces.com/BaseCamp which has not been updated to the 4.x beta yet, hopefully you'll have a better idea of how to proceed.

My advice to you is to use the Automotive Activity Profile. It more closely approximates the recalculation that the Zumo does. Modify your routes, not your activity profile to keep recalculation similar in both BC and Zumo.

Make sure you are using the same map version on both BC and the Z660.

Once you transfer routes to the Zumo and restart it, you have to wait, sometimes for up to 2 minutes before the device is ready to detect your new routes and waypoints. Don't send them to the SD card, only to the device, until you get more familiar with the working of the Zumo.

This is something that has bothered me about Garmin GPSes for a long time, it doesn't make sense to make a detailed planned route in Mapsource or Basecamp, download it to your GPS and then when you activate the route in the GPS re calculates it and messes it up. Why cant there be a setting on the GPS to use the route as downloaded?

What I have doing to avoid this is copy my routes as tracks so I at least still have something to follow when the GPS recalculates and messes up the track.
  • That won't work for the nuvi series as they can't read tracks you send to them ;)
