BaseCamp Wishlist

Wishlist of stuff we would like to see added to BaseCamp.

  • Want to be able to show transparent overlay maps on the topo maps. The devices do this, and so should the computer tool.
  • Would love to see some sort of 'sync' functionality added. If I add waypoints on the handheld, I have to manually find them and drag them to the BC database if I want to keep them. Can be tedious after a vacation where I have added many waypoints or tracks that I want to save. I would find it useful to have a dialog to select waypoints/tracks/geocaches/etc since [date] and other similar selection options.
  • I'd like to see a right-click 'import to this list' option. When I import gpx files the items go to the end of the collection and then have to be manually added to the lists I want them. Then we have to go back and delete the unwanted list that was created when we imported the gpx file.
  • I'd like to see a 'Refresh' option for the device and it's uSD card. We sometimes work online at the same time BaseCamp is running so a refresh is needed to have it recognize manually added gpx files as well as the 'Send to GPS' files from an online site. Currently (v3.3.3) we have to close BaseCamp and reopen it to have it refresh the device file data.

Please fix: Photos get re-categorized as waypoints. (BC 4.2.4)

Wish BaseCamp wouldn't continuously convert my geotagged photos (taken with the camera on the unit) into standard waypoints with blue flags (after importing them to Basecamp.)

It breaks the filtering, and disables the viewing of these photos from within Basecamp. (with the exception of the small impages that continue to appear on the map) I have deleted them from Basecamp files, and retrieved them off the unit numerous times. ~ Every time I check back, these photos somehow end up incorrectly categorized as waypoints.....

    Hi

In the next version of BaseCamp is it possible to add options such as those found in Mapsource. (Options / Display / Services / On)

I believe that we have a fix in test for this as we speak. Thanks for reporting this because it was an issue.

That is good news Jason! (Just saw that 4.2.5 is out.) :)
  • DEM (Profile) data icw Track log data in Basecamp.

    Feature request from 2009-ish:

    Dear FALAGAR / ZHENKEL

Maybe one day you might consider this please?

    PIETERO;

A workaround for the "feet only being displayed out to .1 mile" precision issue is to set Basecamp options to display distance in metric. (meters & km. etc.) ~ Doing so reads meters out to 1000 before converting to KM.
As for directory assignment of the database, you can do this in settings. (a relatively new feature)
  • Thanks TRAKBAK

Will your suggestion (re the 'settings') enables me to seeBOTH the map's DEM profile (surface elevation attributes embedded in DEM) as well as my track log (unit's) height attributes on the 'GRAPH' etc. analysis screen of the track simultaneously?

As I am involved in airborne sport my unit is not always @ surface elevation. Apologies but I need a bit more guidance here in terms of what you meant with your statement.

(I am not sure re the details of the 'feet' issue. But then it is a long time ago indeed :). In any case as SA is using the metric system my BC settings are by default set to it. I might have been playing around with the units at the time when I tried to 'fix' the scale perhaps, but I am not sure. Thanks.)

    Kind regards

    PO

PS : I know I can use some tools to get to some (very unsatisfactory!) result, e.g. set the track to Track - Advanced - Set to Map Elevation, or create a route from a track etc., but it is a very tedious process and to fix the (vertical) scale is a nightmare. One then has to overlay the images by using a graphical tool but as it is only a picture with two profile plots no 'analysis' can be done on it. (Or by using GPSVisualiser / Google Earth which actually shows a very nice presentation (color coded etc.) of the '3D' track log.)

The elevation data is embedded and available in the DEM so it is just a matter of some coding to match the track position with the corresponding DEM attribute and to plot both the (height and elevation) values at that position?

You can set the elevation to display however you want too, just like distances. (There's a 3'rd options setting for depth and others as well, see attachment.) ~ Give it a shot. I don't believe it changes any data, it only displays it "in metrics."

I use Basecamp primarily for "planning" navigation on foot, so the 1000 meter cap before displaying km is far more valuable. Many/most of my "treks" into the woods from vehicle are seldom much more than 1000 meters, and when they are, the measuring tool displays each segment individually. (So this typically works great for me in terms of "perspective"/time to travel on foot.)

  • Apologies Trakbak

I have no issue with the 'units' display thanks. We can leave that one now.

My request is that I would like to display BOTH my flying track's profile (unit's height) AS WELL AS the DEM's elevation together on one screen, i.e. on the Track Log 'detail' screen. (So I would like to the see (manage, analyse, zoom etc.) the two profiles 'simultaneously', regardless if the units are set to ft. or m)

    Thanks

    Kind regards

Some old wishes that are probably forgotten ;-)

    1) Remove the arrival en departure times in the route dialog when the 'more info' checkbox is NOT selected
    2) With the route dialog open and deleting a route/via point, the dialog jumps back to top of the list of route/via points... especially nasty with a longer list when correcting the exact positions... It should jump back to the point before or after the deleted point.
    3) With the route dialog open with a selected route point, the dialog jumps back to top of the list... when you move / correct the via point on the map. The point should stay selected (especially with a longer list...)
    4) After editing an activity profile routing options: there are two options: recalculating routes that use the profile or not recalculating the routes and change to custom profile. The main problem is that when choosing the first option you can wait for a long time before all routes are recalculated of course depending on the size of your database. This will become worse in time when the database size increases. Please add an option without automatic recalculation, but saving the changes..
    6) Being able to change the projection angle of the map somewhere (in the option dialog ? or ctrl-alt A as in mapsource). At least for us northern Europeans the angle is always wrong when we download a updated version of city navigator Europe. Now using JaVaWa GMTK for that, but that should not be necessary...
    7) Ability to lock a library list / make it read only to avoid removing items (especially useful for collections of geographical fixed waypoints)

I guess forum participants should give support for the mentioned points to increase their priority status in the basecamp development team!

Wish you all a nice 2014 with many beautifully routes
