BaseCamp Wishlist

Wishlist of stuff we would like to see added to BaseCamp.

  • Want to be able to show transparent overlay maps on the topo maps. The devices do this, and so should the computer tool.
  • Would love to see some sort of 'sync' functionality added. If I add waypoints on the handheld, I have to manually find them and drag them to the BC database if I want to keep them. Can be tedious after a vacation where I have added many waypoints or tracks that I want to save. I would find it useful to have a dialog to select waypoints/tracks/geocaches/etc since [date] and other similar selection options.
  • I'd like to see a right-click 'import to this list' option. When I import gpx files the items go to the end of the collection and then have to be manually added to the lists I want them. Then we have to go back and delete the unwanted list that was created when we imported the gpx file.
  • I'd like to see a 'Refresh' option for the device and it's uSD card. We sometimes work online at the same time BaseCamp is running so a refresh is needed to have it recognize manually added gpx files as well as the 'Send to GPS' files from an online site. Currently (v3.3.3) we have to close BaseCamp and reopen it to have it refresh the device file data.

Displaying several maps using transparency would be very cool. We'd like to make that happen at some point.

I also like your other suggestions. I created cases for them, but I cannot make any promise when we will find time to implement them.

    Thanks for your feedback!

    BC database management suggestions

    1. Allow the user to set the location of the BC data folder.
Rationale: Many users prefer to put all of their application data into one "data space". It is much easier to use automatic file backup programs that way. In my case, I have a separate D:/ drive where I keep as much of my applications' data as possible. I have programs that back up that disk to external storage (and some to cloud storage).

    2. Support multiple, user-named databases
Rationale: Being database driven, BC is not unlike Intuit's Quicken or Ancestry's Family Tree Maker. Or Adobe's Photoshop Elements Organizer. Each of those programs supports managing separate, independent databases whose contents are meaningful to the user (e.g. household account and small business account; my family tree and my spouse's family tree; my photos and my wife's photos). A user may want to manage her gps data by segregating it into multiple databases. For instance, I am planning a trip to Alaska (was to be 2012, now maybe 2013, but could be later ...:(). I personally would prefer to be able to work on my Alaska planning by opening my BC-Alaska database and have everything there. My current and on-going map/trip planning could be in a separate database.
When the program starts, it opens the last database used. If it cannot find it, it opens a standard 'open file' dialog box. It would seem that this should be easy to accomplish.

    Thanks for the consideration,

I'd like to be able to have two waypoints with the same name, one in upper and one in lower case - thus I could retain 'Home' for my Montana and HOME for my Zumo as these devices insist upon that case,

Plus - be able to update my Zumo waypoints without it automatically uploading all the other lists that I have NOT selected. I've got a separate list for each of my six GPS devices & want/need to keep them separate. Different GPS devices for different needs & locations.

Thanks for your feedback. We'd like to make both of these happen, I just cannot say when. I am pretty sure it won't happen in 4.0 yet.

    Thanks for your feedback.

#1 will most likely be possible at some point in the future.

I don't believe there are any plans to change the behavior you describe in #2.
  • Could it be possible for BaseCamp to support maps installed for Mobile PC? I know, that Mobile PC is discontinued but recent Mapinstall still supports it so maybe BaseCamp could too.
  • I really would love to have the ability to use rubber banding to edit routes on a PC. Basecamp soes it on a Mac and MapSource does it for everybody.

I use the insert tool - looks like a pencil.

PC BaseCamp does support this. Select a route, then use the insert tool (pencil with a +).

This has been bugging me for a while and the solution was right there, thanks :o
