BaseCamp Wishlist

Wishlist of stuff we would like to see added to BaseCamp.

  • Want to be able to show transparent overlay maps on the topo maps. The devices do this, and so should the computer tool.
  • Would love to see some sort of 'sync' functionality added. If I add waypoints on the handheld, I have to manually find them and drag them to the BC database if I want to keep them. Can be tedious after a vacation where I have added many waypoints or tracks that I want to save. I would find it useful to have a dialog to select waypoints/tracks/geocaches/etc since [date] and other similar selection options.
  • I'd like to see a right-click 'import to this list' option. When I import gpx files the items go to the end of the collection and then have to be manually added to the lists I want them. Then we have to go back and delete the unwanted list that was created when we imported the gpx file.
  • I'd like to see a 'Refresh' option for the device and it's uSD card. We sometimes work online at the same time BaseCamp is running so a refresh is needed to have it recognize manually added gpx files as well as the 'Send to GPS' files from an online site. Currently (v3.3.3) we have to close BaseCamp and reopen it to have it refresh the device file data.

    Another one
Moving the map is somewhat cumbersome. why not implement google maps style to move the map: as long as you keep the left mouse button pressed automatically switch to pan mode, so that you can move the map, after releasing the left button return to the previous mode....
  • But that would take you out of Select and Zoom mode, which also respond to the left click

Once I've selected either should I then want to move the map I use the arrow keys ... simples :)
  • I would like to see use of the space-bar to switch to "hand tool" as in Adobe Photoshop! (press and hold space bar and "hand" comes up; release and it goes back to whatever tool was in use).
  • I have also recently had Forum discussions along these lines.
Item 3 - The flatness of the GPX import is annoying as the export flags which folder it has come from but doesn't import back with any structure to it and creates a lot of manual shuffling.
Item 4 - I have similar ongoing Refresh Issues, I use a separate 4GB MicroSD as well and finds myself having to frequently stop Basecamp, unplug the GPSMap 62s, start it disconnected to check that what I have put there is there, then reconnect everything and restart Basecamp to get back to a reffreshed state to carry on from.
  • Both Items I have had Forum Discussion on. I try to "make" Windows 7 keep all my user data on my D: Drive so that I can do backups without getting Windows Open Files in the way.

I keep extensive databases for both Australia and New Zealand within the one Basecamp Dataset and it is a real hassle if one tries to separate them into two files, with backups and restores as the only way to keep them separate. My Database when backed up is 10GB and a backup takes a couple of hours, so to actually swap from 1 country to another, or to do a recovery for some data that might have got inadvertently erased represents about 8 hours work. I have given up keeping them separate and just have 1 huge file. What I would really like to do is to break my structure down even further, I have a folder for each Australian State, then 4 Main Folders within each State, then waypoints etc in folders at that point. It would be really great to actually have as many databases as there are states and work at that level. My Australian Waypoints number over 21,000 broken down by all sorts of standard categories that I have created for a many year journey in a Campervan.
  • Two other "suggestions/requests I have.

1 - I can set everything up in Basecamp and on my MAP62s to be nautical, but I cannot define a mode of transport as BOAT.

2 - When searching for Waypoints - particularly on the 62s I would really appreciate it asking for the intended direction of travel and only display choices of waypoints - say 45 degrees - either side of that direction, rather than "dumping" everything in a complete circle right around the start point and then having to manually sift through and eliminate all those in the wrong direction.

You might want to check your Database folder %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database. There should be a subfolder named 4.0 for the current version of BaseCamp. But there might also be folders for older versions of BaseCamp (3.1, 3.2 etc.) which are also included in the backup. If you delete the old folders, the Backup might get a bit smaller.

Do you have many geotagged photos? How many tracks are in that database?

Ok I did not know that , thanks for the tip!
  • Sorry if these items have been addressed already (a search came up empty) but it would be nice to write a note directly onto a map. This works easily and is very handy in National Geographic Topo!

Also, exporting a map as a .jpg file would be convenient.

    Thanks!

I need to be able to export DXF files (like I used to from Mapsource) to update my company's ARCGis map. I have not yet found a free converter that will change GPX or KML files to DXF or some other format that ARCGis reads. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?
