New clue: when I try to login on firefox I'm getting the error :
"Wrong username or password. You have used up your failed login quota! Please wait 15 minutes before trying again. Don't forget that the password is case sensitive. Forgotten your password? Click here!"
So I went to IE and put in
https://forums.garmin.com//showthread.php?t=25557 and it shows me logged in already. Go back to Firefox and try to login with same credentials as always and still get the error above.
I still haven't seen any problems, using either my Mac or Windows machine. Very strange. I seem to have joined the forum earlier than the rest of you. Could that somehow be related? My ISP is Verizon; is there any correlation there?
I've been logged in for maybe 6 months and from what I'm reading here I'm afraid to log out. I do recall that before then, there was a log in dialog at the top right of the page that never let me log in. I think the way I got around it was logging in to mygarmin, and never logging out from that.
I had not logged on for a couple of weeks and when I tried got the "You used up all your attempts" message on my first try. Once I did get logged in, I lost count of how many times in the following 30 minutes I had to login again.
In my IE8 Favorites I have a folder called Forums with over 20 entries. None give me the same trouble as this one does.
I will now try to post this mini rant, but will add another line to it if I have been logged out while typing. And the result is...
Today tried first with Chrome, immediately got the message that the username/password was invalid and that I had already used up 5 tries. I am able to log int using the username and password fields in the upper right of the forum page but I'm asked to login in again when I try to post a message.
Moved to IE9, set to compatibility mode, flushed cache, same problem
Changed to Firefox, same problem but I persisted and this time I was able to post after re-entering username and password in the upper right fields. However by the time I finished compiling a post I was asked to login again and received message that username and password were invalid.
I logged in again using the upper right fields and was able to quickly post a message.
New observed behavior. I tried to login (to post this) and got the "wait 15 mins" message. Immediately tried again and got the "you've used 2 of your 5 failures". Immediately tried a third time and got in, so that's how I am posting.
If I had to guess (with my SysAdmin hat on), they are setting cookies at some front-end network layer, and a farm of several machines on the back end are supposed to run the forum software.... but the two areas are not fully communicating the cookies right. Note: the word "cookie" in the previous sentence could also be replace by "ssl certificate" or "authentication tokens", depending on the actual problem.
Yes, Support has been contacted, but I think are clueless. I too have a dozen or so vBulletin-based sites bookmarked and none of them (currently) exhibit this problem. One did during the first few months of its deployment (for many users) and their SysAdmins fixed it. But they were a company of just a few hundred employees. I imagine a support ticket going into Garmin for THIS issue gets quite a lot of tossing around because the Zumo firmware devs, the eTrex manufacturing folks, and the Basecamp for Windows devs probably have no idea who in the company is responsible for 'forums.garmin.com'. There is no option on their support ticket system that applies to forums/websites.
BTW, it appears that forums.garmin.com might involve a 3rd-party contracted server farm, so it gets even weirder:
forums.garmin.com canonical name = wildcard.garmin.com.edgekey.net wildcard.garmin.com.edgekey.net canonical name = e3664.b.akamaiedge.net e3664.b.akamaiedge.net internet address = 184.29.142.235
I also have this problem Windows 7 Chrome 16. It is almost impossible to get logged in. I have 5 different user accounts some times one will work. Always one problem or another but same as your problems.
