I have a 3490. I can delete my trip logs and waypoints on the device itself. However, when I connect the unit to Basecamp and select internal storage, all the tracks and waypoints that I deleted on the Nuvi, still appear (but only on Basecamp - not the unit itself). This is a bug for sure as the Nuvi masks out the data but obviously it still is in the unit unless by chance the information is cached on the PC side for Basecamp. Not sure but I have submitted this information to a contact I met at CES so I'm hoping this can be resolved. I would hate to sell this unit down the road with all my information in it (and still building).
Made an interesting discovery today - you cannot access or see the .System folder on their new 3597. Do you suppose that is to protect their data or maybe its insurance that a customer cannot "brick" their device.
I thought I was in mass storage but maybe we were not. I cannot double check as that 3597 is in the mail back to Garmin to exchange for a 3590. We were very disappointed in the 3597.
It's certainly not a bug. It's how it's intended to operate. To be fair the items to be deleted aren't 'hidden', they are in a visible folder whenever you connect your GPS to your PC/Mac. What is not so good is that this behaviour isn't documented by Garmin, but then documentation is pretty sparse these days hence the popularity of user forums, and that is true of many companies :)
Perhaps, but can you explain then the intent of the designers to have a "feature" where a waypoint can be created, then deleted from the device, but visible when attached to basecamp, and can only be deleted from THAT view by turning on special (and potentially unsafe) connection modes, and launching a system file browser (e.g. windows explorer) to dig down and delete the file containing the "ghost" waypoint? Because if that's a power-feature, I'd like to know how to properly use it to my benefit.
As I'm not the designer then no, but I suspect it's because originally Basecamp was designed AFAIK to work with handheld units. Waypoints etc on those can be deleted via Basecamp.
