how to get maps from gmapsupp.img into basecamp?

I have a supp img file which I would like to get reflected into basecamp.
How does that work again?

Install Map to device, then hit Retreive. When I do that it says there is no valid map....
and yet, on the device when I SetupMap, it is clearly shown, and I can Hide/Show it at will.

If I try to install additional maps, it warns that it will overwrite what is on the device.

As far as I can tell BaseCamp only displays preloaded maps--that is those that came with the device.

If its supposed to recognize supplemental maps it's never worked for me.

Or maybe I'm attacking it the wrong way. Yes, I have a Garmin, and a large SD card. I'm trying to find a source for routable OSM maps of the entire continental USA that will install into Garmin's Basecamp or Mapsource software (and then ultimately onto the Garmin device). I do know about the URLs below, but each has its issues. Can anyone please help me find (or build) what I'm looking for? I played with using the daveh file, plus MapSetToolkit and cGPSmapper, but it appears I need a ".tdm" file and some other stuff before I can get it all into Basecamp.

    Thanks!

If you want to have the .img in Mapsource use GmapTool, SPLIT tab, files for Mapsource. Be sure to have free gpsmapper installed.
With Gmaptool you can also join more than one .img in one file: JOIN tab

To see an .img in Basecamp use WRITE tab , set version in header : MS flag to 0.
Basecamp will see every .img, not only the preloaded ones.

Yes, you can use SHELL222's trick to make gmapsupp.img readable by Basecamp. And if you try to send another gmapsupp.img file to the same device or card, it will also give you this warning.

Just a word of warning however. Gmaptool is a very powerful program, but not terribly intuitive, so this should only be attempted by advanced users. Be sure to make a backup of any map files before trying this.

Now if you want to get openstreetmaps into Mapsource/Basecamp, see this (although I have not tried myself): http://pinns.co.uk/osm/mapsourceuploader.html

looks like an easier way to obtain Garmin compatible OSM maps than the link posted by OSTROFF01.

mapsourceuploader.htm lists a string of procedures with lots of ways to go wrong. AFAIK, there's no way to use GPSmapedit to "import" an IMG file into MapSource/BaseCamp. MapSetToolkit will to that, but there are limitations in using it with OSM maps. The downloadable PDF manual correctly identifies MapSetToolkit, not GPSmapedit.

OSTROFF01 is right about Gmaptool. Anyone using it should familiarize himself with the mapmaking process by reading the cgpsmapper manual and mkgmap wiki. Otherwise he could break BaseCamp/MapSource.

Thanks for the hints; I'll try them out some time soon.....
and I am working with a separate 8GB SD card so as not to mess up the one I have already setup pretty well.

P.S. The problem with the .nl tool is that it is very tedious to get all the tiles for all of the conti US. I did it once, and then when I tried to install it, the install tool shows how much space it will take up on my SD card... which is reasonable, but when I went to add some areas (like around the great lakes), it suddenly blows out the mem usage. i.e. I'd have most of the US, and it takes up half of the SD card, but click one more tile and BANG "Memory exceeded". That tells me there's something fundamentally wrong.
  • http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ is probably the best source for OSM maps for Garmin devices. You should select area you need, let service prepare download files and download installer for Mapsource.

Whole OSM is a big map, could be too big to create single img on SD.

The problem is that the OP is trying to split a gmapsupp.img rather than download an installer for the area.

Well, as OP, my problem is that I'd like to get as much of the ContiUS from OSM routable as I possibly can on my 8GB sd card, and update it fairly regularly. Preferably in less than 2 conversion steps.

I found a gmapsupp.img file that is all USA, 4GB, and regularly updated at
    http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/
But that cannot be installed without stomping other map products.

TSAWCHUC, the fact that only a few states consumed 6GB may stand as an example of what I was facing with the http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ files: I got almost then entire midwest from them at about 2GB. When I went to install it on the device (using mapinstaller in basecamp or mapsource) it would exceed my empty 8GB card. By process of elimination, I found that if I unselected certain individual tiles, it would drop down below 25% of my SD card's space. I cannot imagine that certain counties in Michigan's U.P. have >6GB of data, while all of the rest of the Central timezone is only 2GB.

P.S. I've played with gmaptool, and can't seem to make it do anything useful. Will try some other stuff too....

What error message did you get with the 2GB ->8GB install?

You should mention the problems you are having at http://forum.openstreetmap.org/index.php.

FWIW I just compiled OSM data for Colorado, west to the Pacific and Utah south to Mexico and the size of the maps is only 428 MB.

Frankly though, if I were trying to do anything mission critical, I'd spring for a copy of CityNavigator. It's got better compression. Everything north of Mexico fits in about 1.2 GB
