how to get maps from gmapsupp.img into basecamp?

I have a supp img file which I would like to get reflected into basecamp.
How does that work again?

Install Map to device, then hit Retreive. When I do that it says there is no valid map....
and yet, on the device when I SetupMap, it is clearly shown, and I can Hide/Show it at will.

If I try to install additional maps, it warns that it will overwrite what is on the device.

You know you can select the entire USA and then download it as a gmapsupp.img file, from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ right?

No, where is that option? Or do you mean manually ticking every tile that constitutes USA? I've done that - very tedious. I may have to resolve to downloading each state individually, and installing them. (that's still 50 sets of steps).

My bad. I was able to choose United States under North America a couple years back and it would select all states. I did not do the download. Looks like the webmaster has changed that. I just tried and it does not work now. It would probably overwhelm his server. Sorry.

Yeah, I sent him an email a while back suggesting/requesting he do a monthly batch for all USA and just leave it up for ppl to get. No response.

What error message did you get with the 2GB ->8GB install?

You should mention the problems you are having at http://forum.openstreetmap.org/index.php.

FWIW I just compiled OSM data for Colorado, west to the Pacific and Utah south to Mexico and the size of the maps is only 428 MB.

Frankly though, if I were trying to do anything mission critical, I'd spring for a copy of CityNavigator. It's got better compression. Everything north of Mexico fits in about 1.2 GB

I've posted on the OSM forums, but not about that specific problem.
As for CityNav, I have a hard time swallowing paying almost as much as I did for my eTrex to get useful routable data onto it. And I don't use this for mission-critical (Google Maps on blackberry seems more useful to me for that.

I'm guessing that a high-end garmin for my car is in my future (presumably with CityNav installed), but I've been hesitant given the state of Basecamp and Mapsource.
