Thumbnail pictures not cleaned up automatically

Hi everyone,

I use Basecamp 3.2.1.

Here´s what I did:
  • Created a new Collection under "My Collections"
  • Copied a Track from my Oregon to this collection.
  • Since I also have Photos from that Trip, I right clicked the Track and used the "Geotag Photos using the Track".
  • After Import, I realized, that the time of the Photos and Track are not in Synch, because they are not placed correctly.
  • I selected all the Photos in the Collection and pressed DEL, which removed the Photos from the collection.
  • I added them again with the Geotag feature (took me a few attempts to figure out the correct time).

After that I was happy and all looked fine so far. But I encountered 2 problems:

  • If I click on My Collection, I can see all my previous import attempts. It took me a while to clean that up manually. Removing Photos from a Collection seems to move them to the My Collection.
  • Even after cleaning up the "My Collection", I was able to find the Thumbnails on my Harddrive in %appdata%\Garmin\Basecamp\Database\3.2\Thumbnails

I could clean that up manually too of course. But shouldn´t that be done by Basecamp? I can assume, if you are working with Photos a lot you will waste a lot of HDD space with thousands of files (although they are small, they are not necessary anymore).

    1. Is working as intended. You just removed the waypoints from the folder, you didn't delete them. Use the "delete" option in the menu or context menu to achieve this. Using the delete key in a folder will just remove them from the folder.

    2. Did you close BaseCamp after deleting them from My Collection? The thumbnails and photos for deleted photo waypoints should be deleted when the application closes (so you can "undo" deletion).

    Hi Falagar,

to 1: Sorry for that. I should have seen that probably in the manual. I´ll use the delete function in the future. I guess it works like that, because if you have the same item linked to multiple collections, that it does not get deleted by accident when pressing DEL?

to 2: Yes, I closed Basecamp after deleting. Now I even rebootet my PC but the duplicate Thumbnails are still there. If you can´t reproduce that behaviour, then I´ll try to redo that again tomorrow with a new set of photos and another Track if the weather allows that.

    1. No need to be sorry. It can definitely be somewhat confusing. But yes, the possibility to have the same item in different lists is why we don't directly remove it.

    2. We'll look into the thumbnail issue. It would be very helpful if you could verify the behavior is reproduce-able for you.

Unfortunately it´s raining cats and dogs today, so I do not really want to go out to create a new Track and Photos. But here´s what I did and I hope this is OK?

    • Created a Backup of my Data in Basecamp
    • Uninstalled Basecamp
    • Removed the Garmin Folders in %appdata% and %localappdata%, which should "erase Basecamps memory"?
    • Reinstalled Basecamp
    • Imported the GPX with my Track
    • Imported the Photos with the right Click feature on that Track to get them Geotagged.
    • The Thumbnails got created on the HDD.
    • Then I removed the Photos from my Collection (with the delete function, which really removes the Items also from the "My Collection" list.
    • The Photos got deleted in the %appdata% / Geotagged Photos folder.
    • The Thumbnails still remain on the HDD, even after closing and restarting Basecamp.

BTW: After this Test I restored my Basecamp Data from the Backup, which works like a charm :D

    Thanks again for your help.

I think we fixed this for 3.2.2 (which isn't out yet). Let us know if you still encounter this with thumbnails created by 3.2.2 or later.

Wow, thank you very much. I´ll have a look at it when 3.2.2 is out :-)
