I don`t care what anyone says,There is no way for the same custom waypoint symbols to show up in both a Oregon 450 and Basecamp.I named, renamed, sized, resized. And come to the conclusion that Custom waypoint symbols are a waste of time. So,why bother to include it on the Oregon 450?My GPS software and basecamp are all up to date.

I followed all of these guidelines and still nothing.

In that case I guess Basecamp and/or The Universe has a personal grudge against you

Then again you said Basecamp's default ones work so...

    Got`em

Finally got them to show up in both Basecamp and Mapsource.I had to run them thru Paint again and did a little resizing.Ya gotta down size them for BC and MS.But by golly they are there. Thanks to StuartMW for pointing me in the right direction.

Did 16x16 and 8-bit (256) colour do the trick?

Not sure but I know (since the files were emailed to me yesterday) they were incorrectly named.

    i.e. 000.bmp.jpg instead of 000.bmp

Windows Explorer hides file extensions by default so this wasn't seen earlier.

Once I renamed the files at my end they worked fine in Basecamp. I emailed the renamed files back.

Yeah, that default setting in Windows has caused me more support headaches over the years than I care to think about. It makes sense in the Mac environment where you've got a fork that tells you what application to use. But the file type is so important to the basic operation of Windows that it's just silly to hide it by default.

I went back and resized to 24x24 where I could. Then saved in.bmp-24 bit. They are showing up just fine in both Basecamp and Mapsource.STUARTMW found the .jpg extension on the ones I sent him and after he renamed those, they work also. How they picked up the .jpg extension I have no idea.Computer Gremlins I suspect.:D

I was doing a little experimenting with size and I have one that is 28x28 and another that is 31x14.And they are showing up also.I know on my Oregon 450 the limit is supposed to be 32x32..And I enlarged one my 24x24 symbols to 32x32 and it is showing.A little blurry but showing.

And I enlarged one my 24x24 symbols to 32x32 and it is showing.

When Custom Waypoint Symbols were first introduced, with MapSource 6.5.0 Beta sometime in late 2004, they were limited to 16x16 pixels. At that time I think all symbols in MapSource were the same size. The latest version allows the user to select the size from "Very Small", "Small", "Normal", "Large" and "Very Large" but I don't know what dimensions they correspond to.

Basecamp has a slider, with 3 positions, to set the Symbol size. Again I don't know what sizes those choices correspond to.

The point is that MapSource and Basecamp now support symbols of varying sizes. The map POI symbols are all square as far as I can tell but it's possible rectangular symbols are supported nowadays (I don't know).

I think my 76CSx is still limited to 16x16 pixels but the Oregon and other new models probably support larger since they have more memory.

FYI there's no reason why the symbols used by MapSource/Basecamp have to be the same size (i.e. files) as those used in the GPS. That's because the actual symbol icon is NOT transferred when waypoints are exchanged. In fact every waypoint symbol (custom or not) is represented by a code and the PC software/GPS look that up to decide what symbol to display.

Therefore one could use 32x32 symbols at the PC end and 16x16 in their GPS. Of course you'd then have two sets of files to maintain etc.
