Show all tracks?

Howdy, new 62s user and having trouble with differences between 60csx and namely basecamp handling of tracks

I have a large volume of tracks (900+) from a BWCA portage database. each time i go to the BWCA, upload all nearby portages (as tracks) and campsites (as waypoints).

On the 60csx i'd upload the max 20 tracks, and all would neatly display on the map, no need to 'show on map' or anything else.

On the 62s i can upload the max 200 tracks using basecamp, but they are all hidden by default, and i see no way to enable them all in basecamp or otherwise..

also, if i select multiple tracks in basecamp, i cant modify their color, or any other global setting, as a group..

I guess what im getting at is a feature in basecamp to edit/modify general settings for a large number of tracks, including Color and visibility (the ability to specify 'hide on map' or 'show on map'" from within basecamp.

Otherwise we'd need the 62s firmware folks to add a 'show all' in the track manager which doesnt seem likey since im reading oregon users have the same issue.

comments or suggested workarounds for showing all tracks on the map would be much appreciated.

Thanks
  • Sorry to burst your bubble but it has nothing to do with BaseCamp.

Most folks don't want every track visible by default, I certainly don't, but it's a device issue and not BaseCamp. On your device you can set any track you wish to be visible, but by default they aren't.

Not sure about the statement " Most people don't want to see all tracks" This is the reason for this thread as there are folks like myself that do want to see all the tracks on my device.
It's interesting that in Base Camp I can change the attribute to Show all on Maps, change track color etc, but when I transfer the track to my device it looses the "show on maps" attribute but will keep the change of color. Why allow me to change it in Base Camp if it won't stick after being transferred?
Here is an example of why this would be a nice feature... I recently downloaded a number of tracks (45) that made up a ATV trail system for an area I was going to ride. After down loading them to my device , I had to manually go to each track and click "show on map", it took me 15 - 20 minutes to do this. Both my mind and finger were numb by the time I finished.

I am fine with the default setting to be not to show all tracks but give us an option to show all or to make the changes in Base Camp and have them stick to the track as it is downloaded to the device.
  • Well you could try making that suggestion here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/ as it's a device issue rather than BaseCamp.

Sometimes showing ALL Tracks is too much for the device

My Nav-V will only allow me to show a few tracks at a time IIRC its 10. So I suspect device limitation considerations are why BaseCamp developers flip those bits on transfer to the device.

When I did the Heart of the West tour there were too many tracks to show them all at once. When I did my long cross country tour there were 45 tracks. The device simply would not display them all at once. I don't know if all Garmin devices have the same limit. Perhaps the handhelds allow for more. I did find that 10 tracks at a time was sufficient to get me through the day.

I did make an overlay showing all tracks for my backup GPS, a Delorme PN-60.

I've had at least 25 tracks show on map on my Montana, not sure what the limit is for it. I've never tried more than three on the Nav V, so haven't run into that restriction. Good to know.

I have an Oregon 450 and found a way to display multiple tracks without the spider web connectors and without turning on each of them separately. I downloaded the tracks into DNRGPS (free download from the MN DNR) then in the gpx table changed the tident field (column) to give one new name through all rows (track points). Under the Track commands I selected "Compress Tracks", which changed the "new_ trk" column to read "False" in all rows but the first, and left the "True" entries where they were in the "new_seg" column. That effectively merged the tracks into one, but kept the old tracks identified as separate segments. You could probably do this in any gpx editor. When I uploaded to the Oregon the new merged track showed up in the track menu under the new name that had been entered in the tident field and displayed without the spider web connectors between segments that show up if you simply merge tracks in Basecamp and upload to the gps unit. Although the merged track showed up in my Oregon display correctly, Basecamp displayed annoying spider connections between all of the track segments.
