Show all tracks?

Howdy, new 62s user and having trouble with differences between 60csx and namely basecamp handling of tracks

I have a large volume of tracks (900+) from a BWCA portage database. each time i go to the BWCA, upload all nearby portages (as tracks) and campsites (as waypoints).

On the 60csx i'd upload the max 20 tracks, and all would neatly display on the map, no need to 'show on map' or anything else.

On the 62s i can upload the max 200 tracks using basecamp, but they are all hidden by default, and i see no way to enable them all in basecamp or otherwise..

also, if i select multiple tracks in basecamp, i cant modify their color, or any other global setting, as a group..

I guess what im getting at is a feature in basecamp to edit/modify general settings for a large number of tracks, including Color and visibility (the ability to specify 'hide on map' or 'show on map'" from within basecamp.

Otherwise we'd need the 62s firmware folks to add a 'show all' in the track manager which doesnt seem likey since im reading oregon users have the same issue.

comments or suggested workarounds for showing all tracks on the map would be much appreciated.

Thanks

So, give us a choice as to the Default setting. I suspect many folks are pissed off that all tracks are hidden by default. Give us a choice!
  • Interesting how little attention this thread has gotten from garmin!

I recently purchased a stupidly priced Fenix and finding the absence of a "show all tracks" feature is enough to incite a blinding rage. The Fexix permts 100 tracks but to actually show them all 100 on the map users are looking at no fewer than 808 button presses, provided they dont fat finger performing this HIGHLY REPETITIVE TASK. A "show all tracks" feature could reduce this to fewer than 10 button presses, including powering on the unit.

Even more infuriating is the fact that if I connect my Fenix to my PC and use basecamp, the tracks all default back to hidden, forcing me to spend ANOTHER hour pressing buttons, and I only have 23 tracks -- LUDICROUS!

Some have mentioned creating custom maps for large numbers of tracks -- this is impossible on the fenix, since we cant add maps to the device.

GARMIN -- this is not a technical feat, just an apparent choice not to implement such a feature.

Honestly the simple fact that Basecamp has a forum where devs respond when there is no such forum for the unit firmware itself paints a picture of a firmware dev team that is highly disconnected from the user base and unlikely to even know there is a need for "show all tracks" -- a sad state of affairs.

Any BaseCamp Devs willing to walk over to the fenix/62 firmware cubes and tell them they are missing a KEY feature? Again?

    Thanks, i think :)
  • Actually you can add maps to the fenix: http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/maps-garmin-fenix

You can create your own from tracks with IMGfromGPX.
You can have only one map on the fenix, and you cannot switch it off.
  • good to know there is a round about way to get a custom map on the fenix.. something tells me it will take just as long as the 800 button presses i mentioned above to build the map and get it imported properly, etc.... still good to know!

    Thanks

Actually, I created several maps for my fenix. They are easy to create and send to the fenix. But, given the small screen and resolution of the display, a bunch of black lines on the watch face isn't of much help.

I would also like to have a "Show on Map" GPX Extension that would enable passing a "Show on Map" tag to be coded into the Track definition. Unfortunately that will require Garmin to make a change to their GPX "Extension" XML schema and for many/most of the Handheld brands to make software changes in support there of.

In the mean time I'll continue to request the "Show All" feature from the Montana Team and the fenix team/person. Tracks are to important to me so I won't be purchasing another GPS that doesn't have features like this as well as much better "integration" with BaseCamp.

    Cheers,

My bet is that many of the unit firmware guys and girls are thousands of miles away from the software guys and girls. Better to bug the product support folks and not the devs.

I know this is a devise firmware issue, but is the "show all tracks" issue still a problem. I know it is for me. Has it been resolved? The only work around seems to be to make custom maps. Going through each track and selecting "Show on Map" is a major pain. You always relize it at the worst possible time when you need it now.
  • Well if your devic doesn't do it then yes, it's still a problem and yes, it's a device issue and nothing to do with Basecamp ... try making the suggestion here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

Just checking with the community to see if there is anything new on this front.

I'm sure Garmin knows. This is something they either don't want fix/change or is very difficult to fix. It has been known for a long time. The best work around seems to be to make a custom map overlay for the devise with GPX2IMG or JAVAWA.

    Tracks Show on Map

Sometimes I want to show vector data on my 62s and turning on Show on Map for all tracks is a pain. So I converted polygons to polylines in ArcGIS - about 2000 features. I dissolved the 2000 features into 1 complex polyline feature using the Dissolve tool in ArcGIS. Load them into DNR GPS and they show up as 29000 tracks but uploading them into the GPSMap 62s they show up as 1 track. Select the Show on Map and there you go. No feature data but they act as a background vector file like in a Trimble. It works for archaeologists in a place with previously recorded high site/feature density areas. Greg
