Basecamp and GB Discoverer SD Cards

Good Morning,

I have just ordered a new Garmin Oregon 450 with the full GB Discoverer OS maps. I have now discovered that the OS map data on the SD card cannot be used within Basecamp to plan routes. This severely reduces the attraction of this bundle as I would have to pay another £200+ to add the ability to plan my routes on my PC. It seems that map data bought in DVD format can be used in Basecamp as well as on the GPS unit however at the moment the GB discoverer maps are only offered in download or sd card format. I am considering cancelling my order due to this issue and would be greatful if you could answer the following questions:

Will I be able to use the SD card OS data within Basecamp in the near future?

Is it possible to use the downloaded version of GB discoverer within Basecamp?

Is there a cheap alternative of obtaining a DVD for owners of GB Discoverer SD cards?

Will the GB Discoverer maps be available in DVD format in the near future which will work with Basecamp?

Thanks for your help!

It is our policy not to discuss future versions or schedules, so I can't provide you any specific information. I can tell you that reading maps from cards or devices is a feature that we would like to add to BaseCamp.

I don't believe that downloading the Discoverer data will allow you to currently use that data inside of BaseCamp (the download is only for cards).

I apologize for what will seem like a vague answer...

Well here is a Not so Vague Answer.. and the Answer to your Question is NO you cannot use GB discoverer on Basecamp or any other Garmin application.

However, there is a solution (kind of), and its free.

    ITS HERE --> http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php

You can plan OSGB routes and download them to your unit.

Basecamp and GB Discoverer SD Cards

I tried a number of apps to allow me to plan and upload routes to my ETrex, so far the best I've found is Quo from Mapyx. App is free, OS maps are divided into tiles at under £2 each. May be worth a look.

    It's not that it's vague, it's bizarre :)

What exactly is the point of shipping maps in this format if it's not a license restriction?

I notice the new French Topo maps ship as both an SD card and a DVD version in the same package. The Swiss ones ship as a DVD only as another example.

Like most users I think I've been assuming the OS Discoverer maps had some sort of license restriction allowing only use on the device itself. If that wasn't the case then I fail to see why they were shipped as SD cards only. In fact I've been struggling to understand why Garmin went along with this, if they want to produce products like BaseCamp, RoadTrip or Mapsource then they ought to commit to their own product sets and ensure maps released and available on their own website support their product architecture.

Also like most users when I bought my GPS devices (etrex, Oregon 550t and Forerunner 305) I wanted to be able to plan routes ahead of time and then use the GPS to navigate on the day.

What obviously runs salt in this wound is that the OS Discoverer maps aren't cheap

BaseCamp 3.0.1 and greater have the ability to use maps distributed via SD card. Our apologies for not being able to release this information sooner.
  • I still believe the maps should not have been released in this format initially but it's obviously an improvement to be able to use them from the card and it's good to see that the Mac version of Basecamp got released at the same time.

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. The card in my 550t has the Snowdonia map on it and there's no sign of it in basecamp, all basecamp sees is the recreational map of europe (which is rendered really well in basecamp actually)

I have just downloaded Basecamp 3.o.1 and bought a Birdseye subscription to work on my Dakoa 20. under divices it lists the SD card as having the Discover GB north map.

Can this be now transfered to the PC for an overlay as the softwar reports that it is a slow device for image overlay purposes?

Also one set of Birds Eye mapping I downloaded is great quality but another is realy poor, although both where set to High in the download, the poor one is infact so poor (THE THREE PEAKS YORKSHIRE DALES) that I can not plan a route on basecamp with it. ?
  • Interesting to see someone can use the OSGB maps, so I guess whatever problem I'm seeing is fixable.

I was trying this on a mac but I've just installed basecamp on a windows XP virtual machine and it's nearly the same. It's the same in so much as I can't see the maps on the card but I'm getting an error on XP about not reading a file called /Garmin/GPX/userdata.gpx. I wonder if that's the same on the mac but the message is not appearing.

I can stop the error message on XP by creating the file but it's probably got the wrong thing in it and the maps don't appear.

That isn't the same error though, I get an error about userdata.gpx on connection of the device and as Basecamp reads the SD card. It's not stopped me transferring birdseye imagery to the GPSr.
