Basecamp and GB Discoverer SD Cards

Good Morning,

I have just ordered a new Garmin Oregon 450 with the full GB Discoverer OS maps. I have now discovered that the OS map data on the SD card cannot be used within Basecamp to plan routes. This severely reduces the attraction of this bundle as I would have to pay another £200+ to add the ability to plan my routes on my PC. It seems that map data bought in DVD format can be used in Basecamp as well as on the GPS unit however at the moment the GB discoverer maps are only offered in download or sd card format. I am considering cancelling my order due to this issue and would be greatful if you could answer the following questions:

Will I be able to use the SD card OS data within Basecamp in the near future?

Is it possible to use the downloaded version of GB discoverer within Basecamp?

Is there a cheap alternative of obtaining a DVD for owners of GB Discoverer SD cards?

Will the GB Discoverer maps be available in DVD format in the near future which will work with Basecamp?

Thanks for your help!

I think my problem is the same. I just purchased an Oregon 450, then seperately purchased the Garmin 24k Topo Great Lakes for download. I downloaded the map to my SD card in my Garmin, and imagine my surprise when the map doesn't show in BaseCamp? I have the latest versions and updated firmware, and yet I can't view my bought and paid for map! It's a good thing Garmin doesn't have a brick and mortar store I can go to, it would be ugly....

    Has anyone figured out if:

    1. Should it be possible to view maps that were downloaded to Garmin Oregon 450 in BaseCamp.

    2. If so, how do you view them.

    Thanks!

    Dave

That certainly sounds identical to me. I'm not totally convinced it's really reading my internal maps properly either for that matter. It sees the European Recreation Map in the gampprom but no mention of the other maps in the internal gmapsup.

There seems to be a lot of reports of the same problem in various forums, so many reports it's hard to understand why any sort of systematic testing didn't identify this issue. It looks like it wasn't tested thoroughly and then released on a holiday weekend with the support team unavailable.

Ditto I can't see my GB Discover South Downs Way which is on the 550t not the SD card:mad:

It's becoming clear to me that it doesn't work for anyone. And I think I can see why

    It's not supposed to

Re-read what was posted above (added bold for emphasis) :

BaseCamp 3.0.1 and greater have the ability to use maps distributed via SD card. Our apologies for not being able to release this information sooner.

And read the release notes :

Added the ability to use BaseCamp with the pre-installed maps on a connected device or pre-programmed SD card.

As I read that then if you, like me, bought the maps via download then it's not going to work

If that's the case then I'm appalled. If it now transpires that I've paid the exact same money for an inferior product then I'm massively unimpressed. There was no way I could have known at the time of purchase about this limitation.

Ok hang on here! Customer support just contacted me and you are correct!!!

"If you purchases the maps as a download you will only be able to view the maps on your device only. The only way you can view Topo 24K is by installing the map to your computer using a DVD. Maps from the internet will only install directly to the unit only and not your computer."

No where on their site does it say that! I downloaded that map with the intent of using both on my garmin and on my computer!!!! That's it! I am returning my piece of crap Oregon and demanding my money back for the scam map they sold me!!!!

You can bet that every single person I bump into during the day will get an earful on what brand they should NEVER EVER buy!

    Dave

Oh yea...by the way Garmin...this product isn't available in DVD...you should learn about the products you sell before trying to support them...
  • You might try your local trading standards or the equivalent in your area, it's quite possibly illegal in some jurisdictions.

When I bought the OSGB map there was a choice between physical delivery on an SD card or a download. No distinction in functionality was made between the two versions and they were quite clearly sold as being functionally identical. It's no different from opting for blue paint on your new car rather than red and discovering the removed the stereo as well.

Garmin might defend that as due to my date of purchase being prior to the release of Basecamp 3.0 but it's not likely this feature wasn't anticipated when I made my purchase.

More to the point, as of right now no distinction is being made on the website if you were to purchase one of the maps via download right now. And that's not defendable IMHO.

I'm livid, the OSGB Snowdonia map cost £122, it was extortionate at the time and now I discover it was a B-grade product.

Yea snowslider..it's a good thing we don't live next to each other. I'd invite you out for a beer so we could talk bad about Garmin in a pub...

Monday morning I'll be calling customer support. If they don't make this better, I will gladly return my Oregon and take the $99 loss on the map as a valuable lesson... As Frederick Meijer once said..."...when a customer has a good shopping experience, they'll tell 3 people, but when they have a bad experience, they'll tell 100..."

The intent for BaseCamp to display all purchased map products regardless of distribution method (shipped on a unit, CD/DVD, SD card, download) except in the case of license restrictions. To the best of my knowledge there are no restrictions on the GB Discoverer product other than you cannot print any the maps. Product support was misinformed to say that these downloads are only supported on the units.

I'll do what I can over the weekend to see if we can figure out work-arounds for the issues but while I'm not in the office I don't have access to any debugging tools or any of the same maps that you're reporting issues with. All I've got is the same download of BC that you have and an Oregon 300 on loan from the office.

All I ask from you in return is to tone down the rhetoric.

OK here's what I've found out from some testing. On your SD card create a Garmin folder. Copy the map image to this folder. The map image should be named gmapsupp.img. This needs to the full image, not a subset that was created with MapInstall/MapSource. If possible try using the card outside of the unit or a different SD card.

If this still doesn't work let me know.

hey zhenkel...sorry...I just had plans for this for today and tomorrow...I had been looking forward to this all week. Are these instructions for me, snowslider, or both of us?

Thanks for taking the time to help on a weekend...
