Deleting Waypoints, trips, etc from RV 760LMT

I recently purchased a used RV 760LMT.  Works great.  I updated the maps to the lasted version and have been playing around with Basecamp and the very old Mapsource tool.  Mapsource doesn't seem to connect to the RV 760LMT (never finds it), so I use Basecamp.  Basecamp works, I can upload a planned trip, set waypoints, etc.  I can't delete any trips or waypoints from the RV 760LMT however.  I can pick what I want to delete using the menus on the device but when I click delete nothing happens.  Trying to figure out a way around this.    I am new to Garmin products, have been using phone based apps for years and spotted this for sale and thought it would be a good add to our motorhome.

  • Mapsource won't work with newer devices unless they can be set to mass storage mode.

BaseCamp cannot be used to change data on the device, any deletions etc must be done using the device menus as BaseCamp was initially designed to work with On the trail devices that have a file structure different to On the road devices.

You seem though to be saying you cannot delete data using the menus on the device? Is that the case? If so please explain how you're trying to do so and how it's failing?

I suspect what's happening is that you haven't deleted the files you've sent to your device from BaseCamp but I'll confirm that and explain what you have to do once you answer the questions above.

  • A bit frustrating (happy I did not pay list price).  The reason I purchased used is that I've been burned many times over by various firms failing to deliver well tested products to the consumer (by the way, I was an semiconductor applications engineer for 40 years so believe me when I say "I get it").  Not having all the details on this device I was about ready to delete the file structure from the device but then that may have bricked the unit.  So I did a user data only reset, that seemed to fix whatever got corrupted in the file structure and now I can delete waypoints and saved trips (wouldn't you think deleting user data would get rid of those file?  Nope1.

Another half-baked electronic product.   I paid $100 for this unit with the antenna cable (another half-baked idea) which seems fair to me.  There were Chinese made new RV GPS's on Amazon for about  $80 but I didn't trust the maps, with this old yet still working Garmin I felt a little safer.  Mixed reviews exist for all these RV type GPS units; half the people swear by them the other half swear at them.  I am on the fence at the moment.  The Basecamp software is very quirky but I'm teaching myself how to effectively use it.  Not seeing rest areas populate on the map is weird.  I realize Basecamp isn't supported any longer just like the Trip & Waypoint Manager was abandoned by Garmin.  Wouldn't want to be the person purchasing an $800 Garmin today and not having support in 5 years.

  • Glad you sorted the deleting on the device. Just one thing to bear in mind as you go forward. Data you send from BaseCamp is normally sent to your device in a file named temp.gpx. Once your device has imported that data you need to delete temp.gpx via Windows Explorer. If you don't then when you delete it on your device it'll keep coming back.

  • thanks for the tip on the temp.gpx file.  I do keep seeing some past trips I deleted that reappear in my apps trips area on the device.  Where is this temp.gpx file stored?  I looked in the obvious places like local & roaming user locations under Garmin folders but found nothing.  I am now doing a disk wide search for the file but still see no such file.

Is it normal for one of these devices to have it's internal memory nearly full?  Mine only has about 12MB free.  I have explored those memory directories but it seems Garmin locks them down so no files can really be viewed or deleted.  I have no need other than the english language files, it would be nice to clear up all that memory area cluttered with all the other languages.  I searched for a developers utility to aid in cleaning that up but found nothing.

    Regards.

  • All .gpx files are in a folder named GPX.

Having only 12Mb free will cause issues in future. Given it's a used device there could be numerous reasons why there is so little free memory, it may be worth doing a factory reset. You can also free up space by deleting unwanted text, keyboard, voice, vehicle, EULA and help files.

  • I did the factory reset, if that's what they call it.  Turning on the unit while holding your finger in the lower right corner and wait until prompted to delete user data.  All this does is delete some of the user inputted data but not waypoints, etc.  It really doesn't clear up memory at all.  Odd choice by Garmin to store screen captures to internal memory, when I spotted that I tried to delete them and it worked.  I had been trying to view files in the internal memory but you can't do that for some reason but you can delete any file with explorer when connected to your PC.  So I went to town and freed up 182MB of useless (to me) data, mostly all the languages other than English.  I disconnected from the PC and turned on the device and stuff still works.  So now I am a bit happier.  It's a bit of a learning curve but not too steep with Basecamp.  It has a few bugs but I've found work arounds and it does what I need it to do.  SUSAMB, thanks for listening to my complaints and providing useful feedback... I never did find that temp.gpx file.

  • What files are in your GPX folder then? You will have a file there that has the same date time stamp as when you sent the data to your device.

I'm surprised user data wasn't deleted as on most devices it warns you this is going to happen.

  • Let me restart my explanation.  I have no gpx files on my PC.  I did a search on my entire disk and there are no gpx files on the PC.  On the Garmin device there are gpx files, those are the ones that BaseCamp exported (uploaded) to the device.  I've been watching some videos a guy made on BaseCamp, they are a little helpful but not a huge help.  I'm trying to create a multi-day trip using Trip Planner.  On Basecamp it shows up as mutliple days, but when uploaded to the Garmin device it only maps the first day.  It seems you must have a separate trip planned for each day.

  • I was talking about on the device. That is where you will find temp.gpx etc. Once the data shows up on the device you need to delete temp.gpx. It's not needed by the device anymore as data in that file, or indeed any gpx file in that folder except current.gpx, is merged with the data in internal memory and inaccessible to the user and a new current.gpx file written, which is a one way copy of the data in internal memory. You can even delete current.gpx if you wish as it will get rewritten when the device reboots.

  • ok. thanks for the clarification.  I have never seen a temp.gpx file on the device either in internal or sd card memory.  I have seen I can delete the current.gpx data file and it doesn't corrupt things.  I still have the occasional problem where I can't delete any trips using the device as the tool to delete things.  The way around this is to delete files in the sd card  user data folder using BaseCamp and then manually delete the current.gpx file on the device and then things work (again).
