Deleting Waypoints, trips, etc from RV 760LMT

I recently purchased a used RV 760LMT.  Works great.  I updated the maps to the lasted version and have been playing around with Basecamp and the very old Mapsource tool.  Mapsource doesn't seem to connect to the RV 760LMT (never finds it), so I use Basecamp.  Basecamp works, I can upload a planned trip, set waypoints, etc.  I can't delete any trips or waypoints from the RV 760LMT however.  I can pick what I want to delete using the menus on the device but when I click delete nothing happens.  Trying to figure out a way around this.    I am new to Garmin products, have been using phone based apps for years and spotted this for sale and thought it would be a good add to our motorhome.

  • If you send data from BaseCamp you'll see temp.gpx in the GPX folder, either on the card or the device depending on where you sent it.  It's the way data is sent.

  • I still have the occasional problem where I can't delete any trips using the device as the tool to delete things.  The way around this is to delete files in the sd card  user data folder using BaseCamp and then manually delete the current.gpx file on the device and then things work (again).

Trips on the device can exists as both raw .gpx files and as trips that the device has prepared to be traveled ("Imported" is the term used on many devices).  When you delete a trip on the device, it deletes the imported version but the raw trip data will remain available for re-import until the source .gpx file is deleted from the device.

With Basecamp, if you have a device connected to the PC and you transfer a trip to the device using 'Send to' or by dragging and dropping onto the device internal storage, that trip is written to the device as temp.gpx where is sits until imported by the device.  That trip will then remain available for re-import from temp.gpx until temp.gpx is overwritten by the the next trip transfer.

OTOH, if you export a trip from Basecamp and then put the resulting .gpx file on the device, that trip will remain available for import until its .gpx file is manually deleted.  The device does not provide a method that allows you to delete such a .gpx file.  This behavior is the same regardless of whether the .gpx file was put on the SD card or internal storage.

  • I included a few screen shots, pictures are worth a thousand words (sometimes).  I never see a temp.gpx file on my PC or on the Garmin device... ever.  I just uploaded a trip then looked with my file explorer and no temp.gpx file is in either the internal or sd card memory.  I am only showing the gpx folder, but I scoured all the directories and no temp file is ever shown.  This was before I disconnected the USB cable to the Garmin but after I uploaded the trip.  Now after disconnect the USB cable from the Garmin, turning the Garmin on I can see the trip I uploaded.  I then connected the USB cable again and explored the internal and sd card memory, no temp.gpx file is created.

What is weird about the file structure is this.  I instruct Basecamp to upload the trips to the SD User Data area, which it does, but it also copies the same information to the Internal Storage area as well.

I am a retired electrical engineer and was an apps engineer supporting quite a number of semiconductor manufacturers throughout my career.   I believe I've figured out how this thing works but just trying to get a crystal clear understanding.

    Regards,

  • More testing...  It appears that when you delete a trip using the Garmin it deletes it from the internal memory but is still on the SD card.  Perhaps that is what you folks were trying to describe to me.  I just did a test.

    • Loaded a trip to "lee", the trip appears in the SD card User Data area and not in the Internal Storage area
    • unplugged from PC and verified the trip is on the Garmin
    • plugged back into the PC, trip is in the SD card User Data area and now it is in the Internal Storage area
    • unplugged from PC, powered on Garmin and deleted trip.
    • plugged back into the PC, trip is no longer in Internal Storage BUT is still showing up in SD card User Data area

So, eventually the SD card will get filled up with a lot of useless data.   I guess the rule of thumb is to delete the trip on the SD card User Data area and the Internal Storage area with BaseCamp when deleting trips.  If you delete trips on the Garmin, you will have to still delete the trip in Basecamp from the SD card User Data area.

  • When you say "trip" are you talking about "track"?  That is the only way I know of that a transfer to the SD card would automatically end up in internal storage.  Trips require intentional import from the card

FWIW, my process for handling trips is as follows:

The ones I want on internal storage I put there via drag and drop in Basecamp.  The ones I want on the SD card get put there manually.  I first export them from Basecamp to my HD, giving the file a meaningful name.  With the device connected by my PC I use a file explorer to copy them to the card.  The meaningful filename is important because at some point I will use a file explorer to review what is there and remove any I no longer need.  You can't do this from within Basecamp.  You can delete a trip that you see in Memory Card > User Data but that only removes the trip from its .gpx file.  The remainder of the .gpx file remains in place.   Also important to keep in mind when doing exports from Basecamp is to export only the trip, not the entire list folder.  Needed route points will be included in the resulting .gpx file when exporting just the trip.  The only reason to export waypoints is if you wish to import them as Favourites separately from doing a trip import.

In case you don't know, you can create a subfolder structure within the Memory Card\Garmin\GPX folder.  The device will crawl through all subfolders when looking for routes available to import.

To be clear, I have an zumo XT so am operating on the assumption that Garmin devices all function similarly in this regard.

  • Ok I did mention early on that it might be called something else and mentioned date/time stamps. It seems your device acts more like an On the trail device rather than an On the road device and that the files are sent with a different name but the same method should be used, delete the files BaseCamp has sent there after they are showing on your device. Those files are redundant once the device has imported them.

  • I wanted to include another screen shot but it seems I can't add any more photos to this post.  On my SD card in the GPX folder I have Routes, Tracks, and Waypoints.  I have never exported gpx files from BaseCamp to my hard drive and then manually copy them using explorer to the Garmin device.  I only use the upload feature of BaseCamp (Whatever is highlighted in the Library [left window of BaseCamp] is sent to the garmin device using the icon in the upper BaseCamp bar).  I only use the Trip Planner in BaseCamp to create my Trips, but I do add some Waypoints when fixing up the trip (route).  When I send this trip to the Garmin it includes Routes and Waypoints but not sure why Tracks are included (there are only a few of those).

I am using the Garmin RV 760LMT (motorhome centric GPS device).  Obviously Garmin does do different things for different devices which is understandable.  I think I finally understand how BaseCamp and the RV 760 play together in the sand box.

The standalone hardware GPS market is shrinking and being over-taken by phone apps.  I evaluated several Android based phone apps with "Hammer" being the 'BEST' in my opinion based on overall routing performance and cost.  Hammer is free (for now, but I'm sure a yearly subscription is on the horizon).  I opt'd to purchase a hardware GPS on the advice of a few experienced motorhome enthusiast.   I am not unhappy on my purchase and find it worth the $100 I invested in the device.  It works well and seems to route appropriately for my vehicle size.

  • On my SD card in the GPX folder I have Routes, Tracks, and Waypoints.

Yes, the is what you get when you transfer routes from BaseCamp directly to the SD card.  IMO, exporting to a .gpx file and then copying that to the card is cleaner, solely because you can see what is there with a file explorer.  Plenty of folks don't care to do that so do all transfers and deletes from within Basecamp.

  • I tend to agree with you on using a file manager to copy stuff on to the memory card.  The Garmin device sometimes still gets stuck trying to delete a trip using the Garmin Apps - Trip Planner - Delete tool.  I've found the work around is to remove the uSD card and then delete the unwanted trip.  That seems to work all the time.  When you plug the card back in it does not repopulate the deleted trip on to the list even though that file is still on the uSD card (but no longer in internal memory because it got deleted).  It's weird, I have to admit, but now that I know how things work (and I've taken down notes) I'm ok with the software.. hey, it was free and the GPS device was only $100.

  • Glad you're now happy. I'll close this thread but come back for help anytime. You may find this useful. While it's aimed at Zumo devices it's applicable to most Garmins:
