Basecamp and Garmin Express on laptop for Camper 890

Hi,

I have a Garmin Camper 890 satnav with City Navigator Europe 2023.20 installed

My laptop has Garmin Express (showing up to date with version 4.40 on it) and the latest Garmin Basecamp (version 4.7.4) installed.  However, this is a new laptop and I've only just loaded Express and Basecamp.

When using Basecamp, it takes for ever for the maps to load.  After a bit of investigation, Basecamp appears to be loading the map from the satnav and not from the laptop.

When I try to change maps in Basecamp, I get the option to use the map installed on the computer, but this makes no difference, it's still trying to load the map from the satnav, not the laptop, and continues to run really slowly.

Using Basecamps Map Product Manager, it's pointing to the usb connected internal storage of the 890.  Which I would imagine is why it runs so slowly.

I always though Express gave the option to install maps to the laptop as well as the satnav.  If I remember correctly, this is how I ran it all on my old laptop (can't check, it's been re-imaged, so all old software now gone).  Basecamp always ran quite well on my old laptop.

But I don't get the option to install to pc in Express.  If I go to map options in Express, all I see is "Reinstall Map", which, when I click on it, goes to a window to continue to insatll to the Camper 890, no option for PC.

I guess I've missed something during installation of Express and/or Basecamp, but having tried re-installing (uninstall first, then a fresh install) them both a couple of times now, I'm stumped as to what I'm doing wrong.

Any suggestion gratefully received...........

  • One of the reviews in that link says it has US as well as UK maps which indicates it's a Travel Edition.  Will be interesting to hear what Garmin say. If you have 2 different CN maps though it's a Travel Edition

  • Have spoken with Garmin support in both US and UK.  While UK support didn't confirm if mine is a Travel Edition or not, he did confirm being a "Travel Edition" has nothing to do with the issue.

UIK support had me send them Express report logs and go through re-installation, which (again) made no difference.  They have now raised an internal case to investigate why Express isn't working properly and will let me know the outcome.

  • Well whoever you spoke do is wrong. With a Travel Edition you cannot use Express to install maps to your computer.  See this old thread and the comment by ExpressCustomerCare

From the screenshots, this is a Travel Edition Drive 61.  Travel Edition devices do not have the ability to install maps to the computer by design.

  • Well, we'll have to wait and see regarding Travel Editions when they eventually feed back to me - the guy at UK support was adamant it doesn't make a difference.  (Maybe it's a US vs UK thing!!!)

In the meantime, I have found a work around this evening.

Uninstall ALL Garmin related software and rename any left over Garmin folders in programme data and any other Windows folders so that they aren't affecting how a fresh install would operate.

    Restart laptop

    Fresh install of Express.

Connect my Drivesmart 61 and install CN EU 2023.20 to computer.

    Restart laptop

Open Express and check Drivesmart 61 is up to date - which it was.

Check Garmin Windows folders for CN EU 2023.30, and it's where it should be (c:\ProgrammeData\Garmin\Maps

Connect Camper 890 and Express automatically recognised it, and confirmed up to date.

    Restart laptop

    Fresh install of Basecamp.

Basecamp now has the installed CN EU 2023.30 and all the maps on the Camper 890 to choose from, as well as having the Drivesmart 61 visible.

Ran a few tests of sending and receiving data to and fro both devices and all is good.

    Restart laptop

Try all again and everything works as it should.

  • Didn't realise you had another device, that would have worked for you initially without you having to delete, reinstall etc. Will wait to see what Garmin say, should be interesting!

P.S. there is no difference US v EU devices with regard to Travel Edition
