Basecamp and Garmin Express on laptop for Camper 890

Hi,

I have a Garmin Camper 890 satnav with City Navigator Europe 2023.20 installed

My laptop has Garmin Express (showing up to date with version 4.40 on it) and the latest Garmin Basecamp (version 4.7.4) installed. However, this is a new laptop and I've only just loaded Express and Basecamp.

When using Basecamp, it takes for ever for the maps to load. After a bit of investigation, Basecamp appears to be loading the map from the satnav and not from the laptop.

When I try to change maps in Basecamp, I get the option to use the map installed on the computer, but this makes no difference, it's still trying to load the map from the satnav, not the laptop, and continues to run really slowly.

Using Basecamps Map Product Manager, it's pointing to the usb connected internal storage of the 890. Which I would imagine is why it runs so slowly.

I always though Express gave the option to install maps to the laptop as well as the satnav. If I remember correctly, this is how I ran it all on my old laptop (can't check, it's been re-imaged, so all old software now gone). Basecamp always ran quite well on my old laptop.

But I don't get the option to install to pc in Express. If I go to map options in Express, all I see is "Reinstall Map", which, when I click on it, goes to a window to continue to insatll to the Camper 890, no option for PC.

I guess I've missed something during installation of Express and/or Basecamp, but having tried re-installing (uninstall first, then a fresh install) them both a couple of times now, I'm stumped as to what I'm doing wrong.

Any suggestion gratefully received...........

The option in Express to install to your computer only appears provided at some point Express has updated the map on your device. Has it done so? Note too 4.40 isn't the latest Express version, did you mean that?

Once though BaseCamp has indexed the maps on your device it should show them very quickly, mine appear almost instantaneously

Apologies, 4.40 was the map version, Express is v7.16.3.0

I've just uninstalled everything Garmin related and started from fresh.

1st - install Express - installed OK and connected to the 890, no problem.

Express has recognised that the 890 has City Navigator Europe 2023.20 on it, but still only gives me the option to install to the device, not the pc (or laptop in this case).

In the previous install, Basecamp took a while to index the maps, but even then, still runs very slowly. (and it's not like I've got a slow laptop - Dell XPS 17 (9720) i7 with 1TB ssd, 64GB RAM and GeForce RTX 3060 graphics).

Just letting Express update the 890 - in case the install to pc option comes up once it's finished ......

Express has updated to the 890, but still doesn't give an install to pc option.

Did it update the map or simply reinstall what was there? In other words did your camper 890 already come with CN EU 2030.20 or an earlier version? If it came with 2030.20 then you'll need to wait until it updates, then you'll get the install to computer option.

Simply re-installed what was there (CN EU 2023.20), which was the last update a few weeks ago. Shame I now have to wait for another update (which could be weeks away) before getting the option to install to pc. Unless there's way of rolling back the version on the 890.

Still not clear, which map did your device come one? If you had a map earlier than 2023.20 then you should be seeing the option to install 2023.20 to your computer. If it came with 2023.30 then yes, I'm afraid you'll need to wait.

I've had the device since August 2022, it came with an earlier version (can't remember which - 2022.??) and has previously updated at least once that I can remember.

Then that's weird. Garmin did some of their models as Travel Editions, these enabled you to load 2 from 5 maps at any one time, those devices wouldn't allow maps to be downloaded to your computer. Its possible the 890 had a Travel Edition, perhaps give Garmin Support a call and ask.

Edit: just seen that there was a Travel Edition of the 890 so suspect that is your issue

Interesting. Just done a quick google for Travel Edition of Garmin 890 and not finding anything - how do I find out which one I have?

Can see there are travel Editions of Drive 50 & Zumo, but nothing seems to be coming up for Camper.

And assumed it would be this: https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/677369/pn/010-02227-16 (which now appears to be unavailable, just by the nature of selecting traffic with included cable!)

But no mention of "Travel Edition" in either website.

Seems daft not to be able to load maps to pc.
