Basecamp and problem deleting tracks

When I am in Basecamp on my desktop I delete tracks from internal storage - but when I plug in my unit the next time they are still there listed in Basecamp (but are not on the unit)!

  • Which unit?  On automotive units you cannot delete any data using BaseCamp so I assume it's a handheld, as BC can delete data from them, but please clarify.

  • Thank u for replying. It’s a Garmin Map66

  • I think you need to delete the FIT files from the Archive on your 66 too otherwise they are continually re-read by BaseCamp from the Archive.  This can be done in mass storage mode by deleting the FIT files you wish to remove in the \Garmin\Activities folder.

  • Thank you so much!  Yes, of course!  I am a newey at this - you young people are so clever!  I'm just a granny!  Can you explain what you mean by mass storage mode. (is that on the unit?)  I can go into activities folder on my Garmin Map66 and see the tracks by date - but when I press menu it gives me no option to delete.  Also - is there any reason to save them as a FIT file as well?

  • I am not so young now either!!

Mass storage mode is what your device goes into when you connect it to a computer. This means that the Windows File Explorer program can see all the folders and files on your device, and in the microSD card if you are using one.

But beware: in this mode you can seriously disable your device if you delete the wrong files if you don't know what you are doing - and the blogs are full of people who have done this without realising and lost their maps or stopped their device working!!!

You cannot set the device not to produce FIT files as that is now Garmin's default file for interfacing with the Garmin Connect app.

I think it would be safer for you to delete the FIT files just using your device and without going into mass storage mode and using File Explorer, just in case! You can do this as follows:

Power up your device and navigate to Main Menu > Recorded Activities  and select a dated entry. Then press enter and you will see the summary page of this track and you can check on the map that you are deleting the right one. Then press Menu > Delete.

I suggest you note the date and delete just one first, and then open BaseCamp to check that it doesn't reappear!

The GPSrChive website is an excellent resource for information about the Garmin GPSMAP 66, which has a device specific blog too here: http://www.gpsrchive.com/GPSMAP/GPSMAP%2066/index.htm

  • Thank you so much Eyelet99.  Yes! That's super - have done that. I checked each one, like you suggested and it all worked.   I have only ever viewed what's going on in my Garmin unit by plugging it in and switching on Basecamp.  I see that two pages come up when I plug in my Garmin, so that's obviously the mass storage mode - but there doesn't seem to be any way to get into it like that!  I click on the folders and they all seem to be empty!  Thanks so much for your help.  I think I might come back to  you in the future!!  All I have learnt has come from gpstraining.co.uk from whom I bought my unit - hundreds of helpful videos (access for one year), but one always has questions and things that don't seem to work.  Best wishes,.

  • You're welcome - glad it worked!

  • Hello again Eyelett99.  Can you help me with this please?  When I do a route on Basecamp in a list file, with a name - and then send it to internal storage it appears below (in the internal storage section) with, instead of the name, the name "South Coast", which is the name of the Birdseye mapping section that I added in to the file.  I clicked on it in Basecamp and renamed it - but it still appears on my Garmin Map66s unit as "South Coast 1:25k OS".  I can't see any facility to rename it in the unit.  So how do I do it!  Thanks Very much.  Dazzy.

  • Hello Dazzy - Can I check that in BaseCamp you have the data filter set up to see all file types. Click View Data Filter > All Data. This should ensure that you have visibility of all data types in all the lists (nothing is then hidden!). Routes have the three linked green squares icon. Tracks have the two footprints. Waypoints have a red flag.

If you have created a route and sent it (just the route, not the list) to the Internal Storage of your 66s, it should appear with exactly the same name in the Internal Storage list for your 66s and have the three linked green squares icon. You should then be able to rename the route there without affecting the name of the route in the BaseCamp list.

In BaseCamp, if you navigate to the Internal Storage list for your 66s and click on the "South Coast" route, what do you see? Is it the route as you expected?

When you send a route to your device, it should appear in both the Route Planner and the Routes folder. To change its name in your 66s, go to the Route Planner folder, select your route and press Enter and select Rename.

The only way I can think of you getting "South Coast 1:25k OS" appearing would be if you have created a waypoint which uses the map as the default name unless you edit it. In your list folder in BaseCamp, do you have any waypoints with the red flag icon called "South Coast 1:25k OS"?

  • Thank you so much Eyelet99.  I am trying to decipher all that.  I have just done a route (in a list file) in Basecamp, named Grayswood to Sussex, and it appears below as South Coast  OS 1.25k to South Coast OS - so I am surprised that it does not have the same name.  Do I always have to rename it in the bottom section in Basecamp?  I haven't yet connected my Garmin in this instance.  In answer to your question, yes, when I look at the South Coast route in the internal storage it is the route I expect to see.  No, no waypoints with red flag icon.  Thanks again for your time.
