BMW Motorrad Navigator V with BaseCamp - A few questions?

Hi all

This is my first post so please excuse me if these questions have been asked (and answered) already. I did watch all the tutorial videos searched this forum and others but have not come up with the exact answers I am looking for.
I have a BMW Motorrad Navigator V (Garmin device) with BaseCamp 4.6.2 and CN Southern Africa NT 2015.40, Global Map, Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap,NR and T4A Maps_Traveller's Africa 16.10.01 maps installed.
Previously I used my 60CS and 62S with Mapsource so this new combination is somewhat different.
I am pretty comfortable with BaseCamp and how it works and how to execute the workflow to create new Routes (with Start and End Points, Via Points and Shaping Points) and load Tracks from the Navigator etc.
My questions are specific and I will try not to make this too long and be as detailed as possible, so here goes.

Question 1. Why do I get the message "Route(s) sent to BMW Motorrad Navigator V were recalculated because they was created on a map that is not installed on that device"? The same version T4A map is installed on my PC (Windows) as well as on the Device. The CN Southern Africa NT map is only on the Device and only when connected to my PC can I see it in BaseCamp.

Question 2. How do I install the CN Southern Africa NT map into BaseCamp? I don't always have my Device with me and would like the ability to create a Route and then later connect the Device and download the Route to it.

Question 3. Why when I create my Route in BaseCamp with many Shaping Points and it looks great and then when I send it to my Device it looks completely different? The Start and End Points are the same and the general Route but there are several other stray pink lines all over the place? I have figured out a workaround and that is to change the Route Preference on the Device from "Fastest Time" to something else (BaseCamp is also set to Fastest Time). It then recalculates and the Route then 'looks' correct. Is the correct behaviour? Do I have to do this every time I send a Route to my Device? Is this maybe related to Question 1?

Question 4. Following up from Question 3 I then load the Route with Trip Planner and navigate it. I select the Start Point, ie. the first Waypoint. It starts of well but then it starts routing me off the original Route. I am presented with pink lines that criss-cross across roads and instructions to turn left and right where none existed in the original map on BaseCamp. I found a workaround for this as well, that is to enable the map button "Skip" and soon after I start my Route to press this. Is this the correct procedure I need to follow?

I really need to have confidence in BaseCamp and my Navigator hence I am trying to fully understand the behaviour.

Thank you
Kevin

  • Unfortunately your attachments don't appear to work. From what you say though, and based on previous comments, if you had only the SA map selected and sent a route created by the T4A map then of course you will get issues, including the 'recalculate' message. As you note, if you create a route using the SA map and send it to your device you don't get the 'recalculate' message since the map is the same (since you're using the map from your device in BaseCamp).

Do you not see the embedded images? I do. (See below)

I am going to do some further tests but this seems to be the case yes.

Try resetting your Motorcycling>>Routing preferences back to default in BaseCamp. This will enable some avoidance categories, but might be the default state for which the device is designed.

Yes, embedded images show, just not the ones in your last two posts.

  • Well now I can see the pictures it's pretty clear what's happening, but what you're doing to cause it I'm not sure. Those straight lines are indicative of a route being created and sent to your device where the route points don't align with any roads on the routeable the map being used on the device. So what it does is link the points to the nearest point that is routeable with a straight line.

    Ok, some feedback.

What I have managed to determine is as follows. It is important to ensure this has been done. I am using the CN Southern Africa NT 2015.40 map but the same applies for other maps.

    1. Use the exact same version maps in BaseCamp as on the Device. I created the Route in CN Southern Africa NT 2015.40 (ie. Streetmaps) (if it is in the T4A map you will need to force it to recalculate by changing the route preference).
    2. Only enable CN Southern Africa NT 2015.40 map (ticked) on the Navigator.
    3. The same vehicle must be selected in BaseCamp as well as on the Navigator eg. Motorcycling
    4. The same Avoidance options must be selected in BaseCamp as well as on the Navigator.
    5. When starting the Route and you realize it is not following the Route as it was planned in BaseCamp use the “Skip” button on the map or the option in the menu accessed with the toggle wheel. Select the default WayPoint when starting to ride the Route (the second in the list, ie. the WayPoint after the Depart WayPoint), if you select the Depart WayPoint you will be continually rerouted back to the Start, hence the reason to use “Skip”.
    6. Use Shaping Points and not Via Points unless you plan to stop somewhere to eat or go to a POI etc. Otherwise you will have to "Skip" WayPoints as you ride past them.

These facts are important to remember, they can really cause you to pull your hair out, or worse, get completely lost.

Thank you to those that responded with advice.

I think I have things under control now.

  • Glad you've got it sorted, I'll close this thread.
