Trying to purchase Birdseye Select Raster for new 64s

Hi all,

I've just purchased a new 64s and am trying to purchase Birdseye Select for it. I've registered the device with my garmin account, i've connected it to basecamp and updated it to the latest firmware and I've signed in to my garmin account in basecamp too. I open the "download birdseye imagery" dialog in basecamp, then select birdseye select v2 from the list, and it tells me i have no credit. This is what I expected, because I haven't bought any yet. If i then hit the button for shop online, it takes me to the garmin shop web page. Great. I navigate to the birdseye select page, add it to my cart. However, when I come to checkout, it just keeps telling me in a little yellow box at the top of the screen:

"Before we proceed to checkout, we need to make sure you have a device that is compatible with the highlighted items in your basket. Please connect a device now and click "Check Compatibility". Once we confirm it is compatible, we will add the device to your account and continue with checkout. Check Compatibility"

So, I click check compatibility, but it just takes me to the "add product" part of my account page. I can't add my device, because its already added. So i tried removing the device, then following the check compatibility link and adding it again. Once i've added the device it offers me a button to "continue with purchase" but this just takes me to a blank page, before redirecting me to the homepage. I go back to my cart and the above text about checking compatibility is still there. I click the link again and get taken back to the add product page. And the cycle begins again. The behaviour is the same whether the device is connected or not, and i've tried Chrome, Edge and IE all with the same effect.

Anyone experienced this problem? Many thanks!
  • I believe for the Garmin webpage to see your 64 you may need to install the Garmin plug in from here

    http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

Once you've downloaded it revisit that link and check it sees your 64. If it doesn't click on the link that says 'Don't see your device?'

Then try again for the BirdsEye map download.

Many thanks for the response. Tried it in IE - Chrome doesn't support the plugin. Managed to get it installed and it detects my device successfully, but annoyingly no change to the checkout behaviour, in IE or Chrome or anything else. I'm still stuck with the yellow message. If I try and checkout anyway, I get a red box which says:

"Checkout is disabled due to the issues reported below."

It's a strange sort of error. The text leads you to believe it needs to detect the device, but the page it directs you to is one to register a device with your account. If it's just checking for compatible devices registered to your account, it shouldn't need a plugin to actually detect the device connected right now. Either way, the device is both connected (and detected by the plugin and the desktop software) and registered with my account.

    Any other ideas?
  • Afraid not. You'll probably need to call Product Support for help.

It's always worked for me when I've downloaded BirdsEye Select mapping.
  • Ugh. I don't relish the thought of that :P

Thanks for the help, anyway. Something funny is definitely going on. I am now at home, so on a different PC, and have tried registering a new account with a new email address and going through the checkout process with that. Device plugged in from the word go, and registered with my account as part of the checkout process. Still no joy - exactly the same error. The page that i get redirected to after clicking "continue with purchase" after device registration, does load very briefly with a single line of text on it saying cookie preferences, which is clickable. If i click it before it redirects back to the same basket page, it pops up with the usual "agree" to cookies dialog. Perhaps this is something to do with it, though when i click on the cookie preferences in the page footer, I'm accepting everything. This is a very silly problem to have. Poor show, Garmin!
  • Wouldn't be too quick to blame Garmin. Always worked for me ...

Quick question: does anyone know of another way to purchase the birdseye maps which bypasses the device check? I'm fairly certain if i could just get the on my account, they'd download through basecamp perfectly fine. The problem is i just can't get the map credit added to my account...

I'm sure it has, but as a new customer it's a frustrating experience for me. I work in software development, so I'm pretty unforgiving of a poor user experience. I'm also pretty IT literate, so user-error is unlikely given the simplicity of the task I'm trying to complete. What can I be doing wrong? Should be pretty straightforward. I'm fairly certain it isn't just "my computer" that's the problem. As I said further up, I've tried my work laptop and my home desktop with the same effect, and I've tried registering a completely new account on my home computer, also with the same effect. If a user goes to that much trouble and still has the problem, you can't really get away with saying it's their fault :P The truth is simply that it shouldn't be this difficult.

I wonder if the site is just experiencing problems right now? Is there any chance someone can try adding a birdseye map credit to their basket and seeing if they can get past the device compatibility check bit? I should also mention I'm in the UK, so it could be a problem with their UK portal...

Always possible. You could try again later. Product Support is a freephone number here in UK and they're usually very helpful.

    Thanks, think I'll do that.
