Possible to combine GMapTool USA maps?

I've been experimenting with OSM maps and Basecamp. Results were good but not ideal.

I purchased the downloadable version of Garmin's City Navigator North America maps and am awaiting delivery.

In the interim I downloaded (with some difficulty) the routable topo maps from the GMapTool site. (Only the USA Northeast and South Atlantic maps for my possible trip planning). I installed them quite easily and they seem to work well.

However I am wondering if I can combine the two regions into one so that I don't have to switch between them. I can't seem to loctae how it might be done on the internet.

Thanks for any advice.

You could go here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and select just the tiles you want to download and I think it will come down as one region.

Or, just download the entire USA if you have the room and if you won't bump up against the max tile number limit for your device.

Yes, that will work if you select multiple adjacent tiles in the same request. It's not an immediate download. You will receive an email telling you when the maps are ready -- usually a few minutes to a couple of hours depending on how busy the site is and how much map data you have requested. Your first email has a link to a page that will show you the status of your request that you can check periodically if you have made a large request. At least I think that's how it worked. It has been awhile since I used it.

The first time I would suggest just grabbing two or three tiles in the target area to get the hang of using the site and how it interacts. You will need to figure out which map type you want, eg. "routable", "routable (new)", "routable bicycle", etc., and how to request a region (country, state/province, etc.) or just manually select multiple adjacent tiles.

If I recall correctly the email you get when the maps are done gives you the choice to download multiple "products". I think you will be able to download at least a compiled mapset (gmapsupp.img) that can be loaded directly onto a device and a "Mapsource installable" set that can be installed on the PC for use in Mapsource and Basecamp.

    I hope that helps.

Another way, perhaps, if the files you downloaded are installed in BaseCamp AND you have an SD card in your device might be to use Garmin's MapInstall App to install the files to your SD card. The interface is more than a little confusing but it will produce .img files from .gmap files. It will also OVERWRITE the maps you already have installed on your device if you try installing to the device since its output file has the same name as the now installed mapset on your device unless you have already given that file a custom name.

Garmin's MapInstall App takes all the individual tiles in all the maps you select and sews them together into a seamless blob that makes up the .img file you need for your device. Its limited to less than 4 GB and the tile limit still applies. As a quick test I just did it with the NorthEast Topo Routable downloaded from the site you mentioned. When I have more time I'll try combining a couple of areas.

    Spot on :)
  • Thanks for your responses. I've only just got back to this.

I was already able to download and install the maps from the garmin.openstreetmap.nl site and combine them OK.

My query is actually about routable topo maps from the GMapTool site. (Only the USA Northeast and South Atlantic maps in my case).

I'll read your responses in more detail and see if I can use them to combine these North East and South Atlantic maps.

    Regards, Jeff
  • USA OSM Topo Routable is actually a single map artificially divided into smaller parts. I could post a full map, but it would be about 6GB download. Probably wouldn't be popular.

It is possible to combine these maps, but not an obvious process and I actually haven't foreseen this need. I could provide some additional files for combined mapsets.
  • Thanks POPEJ.

That's what I needed to know.

The routing of my itineraries still seems to work OK with the maps separated (better for some reason than the garmin.openstreetmap.nl ones).

However if you have the time and resources a combined US East coast map would be good (only the USA Northeast and South Atlantic maps needed at this time as that is where I hope to visit). (Driving holiday not motor cycling, bicycling or very much walking). Alternatively if you have any instructions on how I could combine them myself ready to hand that would be good too.

Don't want to put you to too much trouble though so by all means say no.

    Thanks and regards,

    Jeff
  • I just have published a new version of USA Topo, so for any manipulations you would have to download maps again. I have prepared a set of data for merging Northeast with South Atlantic parts, you can download it here:
    http://www.gmaptool.eu/inne/US_East_OSM_Topo_v20.7z

This is a kind of template, which has to be filled with real data from Northeast and South Atlantic. You have copy content of folders "Product1" from both complete mapset to the same folder of template. Some of files from these folders are the same in both mapsets, so simply ignore any conflicts, when copying second mapset. After collecting all data, you can install US East the same way as other mapsets.
  • Thanks POPEJ. I will check it out as soon as practicable.
