Possible to combine GMapTool USA maps?

I've been experimenting with OSM maps and Basecamp. Results were good but not ideal.

I purchased the downloadable version of Garmin's City Navigator North America maps and am awaiting delivery.

In the interim I downloaded (with some difficulty) the routable topo maps from the GMapTool site. (Only the USA Northeast and South Atlantic maps for my possible trip planning). I installed them quite easily and they seem to work well.

However I am wondering if I can combine the two regions into one so that I don't have to switch between them. I can't seem to loctae how it might be done on the internet.

Thanks for any advice.

Jeff
  • OK so I download the combination "template", copied the contents of my North East and Atlantic Product1 folders into the Product1 subfolder of the East USA folder.

    I have the following issue:-

    1) The level of detail in the highest map detail level is missing in some parts of the map; whereas it is present in the NE and Atlantic maps I had previously downloaded.

    2) When I try to calculate a road route between Rochester and Buffalo NY State on the combination map it draws a straight line. However when I do it on the NE map it works fine following the roads. I'm wondering if this is related to the detail issue in 1) above because the Rochester-Buffalo route is in a missing detail region. This is what I was trying to solve in another thread I initiated https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?350843-Basecamp-error-planning-route-from-Donegal-to-Gettysburg-PA-USA

  • I've now noticed that if I add a POI, eg a city like New York, using the combination map, Basecamp crashes. If I add the city as a waypoint using the NE map it works fine, but as soon as I switch the map to the combined one Basecamp crashes.

I did have some trouble downloading the map (it was painfully slow) and I'm wondering if it is corrupted. I will download it again.

  • If you are able to unpack archive, then files are correct. To speed up download you can try a download manager, which gets multiple parts of a file simultaneously.

I have observed some initial problems with routing, but then it started to work. I'm not sure, what causes these problems, maybe multiple copies of a map. Please try to clean BaseCamp cache, pressing Ctrl-G twice.

I haven't suffered crashes or missing details. Maybe your combined map is not complete? Combined folder "Product1" should be 1*844*937*553 bytes, which include some USNE* and USSAtlan* files, which actually aren't necessary for this mapset. Please remember, that all file should come from current release v20.
  • That indicates a problem then. My combined product1 is only 1,159,737,344 bytes.

Ah only just realised I was still using v19. I'll try again. Thanks.
  • OK - repeated everything and a brief test indicates it's all working OK. Thanks POPEJ.

You indicated above that you had prepared a full USA map. Is there a link available to that? I used a download manager to download the v20 files; still very slow.

    Thanks and regards, Jeff
  • The whole map of USA can be assembled the same way - download all 8 parts and this template:
    http://www.gmaptool.eu/inne/USA_OSM_Topo_v20.7z

Then copy all content of subfolders "Product1" from parts to the subfolder of template.

I have prepared another template, which combine Pacific and Moutain:
    http://www.gmaptool.eu/inne/US_West_OSM_Topo_v20.7z
  • Thank you very much. I'll give that a go.

In the meantime I'll have to get back to working out what I actually want to see otherwise I'll never get there.

    Cheers, Jeff
  • OK after some trouble with files that didn't download properly everything appears to display properly although I haven't done much route planning yet.

I have a further question. When I do some routes I search for cities and towns using the points of interest panel which appears. I restrict the search to POI - cities. I can do this with each of the regional maps but in the combined full map the cities option does not appear; only "All points of interest" and Custom POI's. I'm not sure it is supposed to work this way or whether there might be something missing.

  • I spoke too soon. Combined map is crashing Basecamp. I'll reinstall all and try again.

Further investigation revealed that the crash occurred when I tried to search for Auburn and Oxford MA in the combined map Pure coincidence I just chose those places for test). As it turned out I couldn't replicate the crash using other places closeby so maybe I accidentally found a gap in data. No big deal.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

I used the Gmaptool maps to plan my trip to the USA,1 16 week, 15,000 mile road trip of the north east and Florida. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am hoping to return this year (from Australia).

The full USA template that POPEJ supplied was useful. I'm wondering how I might go about obtaining a template for the current map versions ie v27. Or alternatively if there are any instructions on how I might create such a template for myself.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Jeff K.
