Basecamp cannot find addresses

This is my first attempt to use Basecamp after purchasing a Zumo 665LM for my bike, so please forgive my unfamiliarity with the product. I was attempting to plan a route to be transferred to my device, but Basecamp seems to be having a great deal of difficulty with existing addresses. The place I want to go is the Speakeasy Art Center at 353 Court St, Pekin, IL 61554. Basecamp does not recognize this as a good address. Google maps has no problem finding it. I then looked on the map in Basecamp for a nearby address to navigate to. The Tazewell County Circuit Clerk's office pops up as a POI at 346 Court St. I tried clicking on the button to add that address to the itinerary, but absolutely nothing happens. Then I tried manually adding the address listed right on the map from Basecamp to the destination box, and that address also is not recognized. What's going on here? This program seems very buggy....
  • In Express there is a link called Map Options. You can select there whether to update to your device or to your computer or both. Clearly if you want to keep them in sync whenever there is a map update select Both. For now select the Download to computer option to install 2017.10 to your computer. It will then be available in Basecamp without your Zumo connected.
  • Great, thanks. I just have to wait for Mediacom to get my internet working again and I'll give that a try.
  • Is there some reason I can no longer upload pictures here?
  • Hopefully this works. This is what I am seeing when I type the address in the Trip Planner Destination box. As you can see, it does not appear in the drop down list. There is nothing that I can do to fix this, it seems. As you can see, the address does appear in the map, but BC refuses to recognize it. That makes NO sense to me whatsoever.

  • This is what I get when I just enter the first part of the address, as you see the full address is the first one listed in the drop down box. In fact I've found that just entering 17 S C also gets that result.

Why this isn't working for you is a mystery, do you now have the NA map installed on your PC? Is it the one selected when you go to Maps in the toolbar? Ensure your device isn't connected so that there's no chance of using the map on your device by mistake.
  • The maps will not install to my computer. It goes through the process, gets almost done, and then I get a random remaining time (like 1 hr and 33 min) and no matter how long I let it sit, nothing ever happens. I have NO problems with a multitude of other software on my system. This Garmin software seems pretty horrible. I'm going to have to uninstall everything and try again.
  • Well the Zumo 665 is hardly a flag ship device, but it is true that there can be an issue with routes sent from Basecamp to some Zumo models, including the 665. Having said that many folks in the Zumo forums say it works.

However as a discontinued model it's unlikely anything will change so it is what it is. The current Zumos (390, 590) aren't known to have any problems. There is detail on this here (see Note 2 at the bottom)

    https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B65814150-50b3-11dc-4ec8-000000000000%7D

However none of that should impact on the way BaseCamp is working.

Well, this certainly would have been nice to know!

2The zumo 400 and 500 series, 550, 600, and 665 devices are NOT compatible with routing in BaseCamp. These devices may appear to take a route without issue however, when navigating the route, an error message may appear. An alternate program to use is MapSource. First download the map to your computer, then use MapSource to create and transfer routes to your zumo.

This basically means that BC is officially useless with the Zumo 665 and other listed devices. It also means that since Garmin has abandoned MapSource, they have essentially abandoned the 665 completely. The more I see about this, the more I think I should just return it and maybe start looking at another manufacturer.
  • And then of course I click on the support link at the Garmin website and their support page is also down. I've seen someone else on these forums mention that the support page was down. Just how long has Garmin been without support for their customers?
  • If you can't download the map or access the support page then I suspect you may have an issue with your system or ISP. Never had an issue downloading maps and I can access the support page. Have you tried a different browser?

MapSource should you wish to use it is still available but as I've already pointed out the issue only seems to affect certain routes and many folks report no issues using BaseCamp despite the warning given in that FAQ. If you want more advice on a 665 with Basecamp there is a Zumo forum here www.zumoforums.com
  • First, in Garmin Express, there is no option that I can find to install the map to the device, the computer, or both. There are options only for reinstalling the map on the device, and installing to computer. I'm not sure how to make sure that map updates are applied in both places because of this.

As I posted previously, the download of the map from the 665 to my computer would hang every time when it was nearly complete. So, I used the option to reinstall the map to the device (downloads over the internet, I assume). After that was complete, I was able to use the Install to Computer option. Now that I have the map installed on my computer, IT CAN FIND ALL THE ADDRESSES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY UNRECOGNIZED! Success! Now the only question is why did this happen? It's difficult to believe that it was a corrupt map install on the device, because entering those same addresses directly on the device brought them up with no issue. It seems to be a communication issue between BC and the Zumo 665LM. Regardless of whether this device has been recently discontinued (to be replaced by a much more expensive model), Garmin owes it to its customers to ensure that it works and has the features advertised by Garmin. IN FACT, the outside of the box for the 665LM states, as a feature,

    "TRIP PLANNING with BaseCamp"

This directly contradicts the statement on Garmin's website that I quoted above. Garmin has an absolute responsibility to fix this. They advertised it as a feature.
