Basecamp cannot find addresses

This is my first attempt to use Basecamp after purchasing a Zumo 665LM for my bike, so please forgive my unfamiliarity with the product. I was attempting to plan a route to be transferred to my device, but Basecamp seems to be having a great deal of difficulty with existing addresses. The place I want to go is the Speakeasy Art Center at 353 Court St, Pekin, IL 61554. Basecamp does not recognize this as a good address. Google maps has no problem finding it. I then looked on the map in Basecamp for a nearby address to navigate to. The Tazewell County Circuit Clerk's office pops up as a POI at 346 Court St. I tried clicking on the button to add that address to the itinerary, but absolutely nothing happens. Then I tried manually adding the address listed right on the map from Basecamp to the destination box, and that address also is not recognized. What's going on here? This program seems very buggy....
  • I searched for that address and it came up.
  • It won't on mine. I have the latest version installed. So why does BC find addresses on some systems, and not on others? Is BC not compatible or buggy on Win 10?

  • So, if I type the address in on the device itself, after disconnecting it from my computer, of course, it finds it no problem. It seems that BC is actually pretty terrible if it cannot even find an address for a simple point to point navigation. Is there anything else out there that will interface with my zumo that actually works?
  • I tried to search again and this time it came up. Still, I cannot navigate to it. I just get errors. I right clicked on the result and selected "Start trip to here" and the error in the following image came up. This means that BC is essentially useless. There is absolutely no function in this program that assists in any way with planning trips or navigation that actually works if a simple point to point fails completely:

  • You're trying to add a waypoint to the map which you cannot do. In the upper section of the left window create a file list under My Collection. (Highlight My Collection and from the drop down menu select File/New/List and give it an appropriate name.) Now highlight the new list and search for the address, create a waypoint and you should be all set.

By the way I recommend that you install the map to your computer. You can do this using Garmin Express. With the maps installed on you PC you will not need to connect your GPS to use the map and it will redraw faster.

BaseCamp is a very good program but it can have a steep learning curve for some folks. Once you have a handle on My collection works the rest is relatively straightforward.

The tutorial linked in my signature is very helpful. It is designed for motorcyclists but the basics are the same and it will give you a good basic understanding of the various aspects of BaseCamp.
  • That still does not address why BC cannot find that address when planning a route, but can find it when searching for it directly. If I cannot add a waypoint, then why would the option to "Plan a trip to here" even exist? This seems like exceedingly poorly written software, especially for what I paid for this device (yes I know that this covers a multitude of Garmin devices at various price ranges).

I created a new list called "Pekin trip", but there is no option to create waypoints within that list that I can find. After highlighting the list, I clicked File/New/Waypoint and absolutely nothing happens. No reaction from BC whatsoever. I right clicked on the "Pekin trip" list, and there is no waypoint option. Now what?
  • My last post didn't appear here for some reason... that still doesn't explain why BC cannot find that address when creating a route, but can find it when searching for it directly.

    VERY buggy software.
  • Please take a look at the tutorial.

The function to create a waypoint is not in the list. With the list highlighted:
    1. search for the address.
    2. When the address comes up on the map create a waypoint. There are at least two ways to create a waypoint from the address. a) right click on the point on the map and select the waypoint icon (red flag) or b) in the found list on the right click on the address and select the waypoint icon.

To create a route you need at least two waypoints. Note: you do not get the choice of Navigate to here because BaseCamp does not know where you are. So create a second waypoint for your home, or wherever you want to navigate from and save it to the same list. Then in the list highlight both waypoints, right click "Create Route using selected points".
  • So, in other words, the "Trip Planner" function of BC is completely worthless? You might get BC to find an address, and you might not. It's just a toss up and you hope you are lucky? What kind of software is that? I really thought that paying good money for this device would also get me a competent software interface with which to plan trips. Apparently not. It appears that you have to go through a convoluted process of creating a list, searching for addresses, adding waypoints, then creating routes from those waypoints. Is there no working option to simply pick an address and tell it to "plan route here"? I'm starting to regret my purchase.... Is this the best that Garmin can do?
