Basecamp cannot find addresses

Try this: Go to Trip Planner/New Trip/Continue and add that address to the destination field. I bet it's not recognized. That's a massive bug. How does anyone use this program with any confidence?

Well, like any software it does take an effort on the user's part to learn. BaseCamp is really not a difficult program to learn and I've given you one source that will help. Another source are the Tutorial videos in BaseCamp Help.

BTW I don't work for Garmin, but I use BaseCamp to plan and share many routes (both simple and complex) with no issues and find it to be a great program. The route I'm working on tonight will be for my summer cross country trip from Maine to Co, Wy & MT. I would not consider using anything other than BaseCamp.

Did you try to find that address using the Trip Planner function? That's not a matter of a user learning curve in any sense. The failure of BC to recognize an address using one method but successfully recognizing it using another is a bug in the software, period. That's very poor software programming. That should NEVER happen. The only reliable method for recognizing valid addresses seems to be an overly convoluted series of steps. I don't see any valid reason why that should be. Yes, sophisticated route planning tools could potentially make this a powerful application, but the complete failure of the program to find the very first address I input in the most simple of commands, followed by the verification that this is a massive software bug because convoluted steps DO find that exact same address within the program, quickly kills any confidence using it.

As has already been pointed out you need to learn how to use the program rather than expecting it to work the way you want. Like others I use BC without any issues when creating trips and wouldn't use anything else. I've just created a multi day trip along the US East coast and everything worked as I expected.

As an example, I note that at one point you were trying to create a waypoint directly on your Zumo having selected the map on it. Your Zumo doesn't allow that (nothing to do with BaseCamp) which is why you got the error saying 'the selected list or device does not support adding waypoints'.

I copied the address directly from your first post 353 Court St, Pekin, IL 61554 and pasted it into the search box top right having selected the NA map and it found it straight away. It's therefore hardly convoluted or a bug, it works exactly as it should do.

I created a new list called "Pekin trip", but there is no option to create waypoints within that list that I can find. After highlighting the list, I clicked File/New/Waypoint and absolutely nothing happens. No reaction from BC whatsoever. I right clicked on the "Pekin trip" list, and there is no waypoint option. Now what?

Having selected File, New, Waypoint you say there was no reaction. Did you try clicking on the map screen where you wanted to place the waypoint? That's what is required as BaseCamp cannot read your mind :)

As already pointed out by Breezly you are trying to do things incorrectly, the link to the guide in his post is aimed specifically at Zumo users and it would help you if you worked your way through it rather than simply 'clicking everywhere' in the hope the program will understand what you mean. Once you have read through that guide you will find, as Breezly and I do, that BaseCamp is a very powerful route planning tool.

Maybe I'm not explaining myself clearly enough. Using the Trip Planner function from the menu bar at the top, BC cannot find some addresses that clearly exist. It simply refuses to recognize them in any way. Even addresses of local POIs that are currently appearing on the map right in BC, if typed into the destination box, are STILL not recognized as valid by BC. I can type that exact address into the Zumo after it is disconnected and it is immediately recognized. Other addresses are also recognized by BC, but it seems like complete hit or miss as to whether it actually functions. Please explain to me how that is MY error vs a glaring bug in BC?

Can SOMEONE please try this- open BC, launch the Trip Planner function from the top, and try to set that address I listed in Pekin as your destination. I bet BC fails for you too. It would be nice to get some confirmation on this. This is the very first destination I tried setting a route to. How many more will BC refuse to recognize?

BTW, if I do just as you did- using the NA map (the only map I have other than the world map) and enter that address in the search box at the top right, it will NOT find that address. I have to use the Find/Find Addresses function from the menu bar and then enter each address component in a separate box (street number, street name, etc) as show in the picture I uploaded. Otherwise, it will NOT find that address. That seems to be another bug.

You're trying to add a waypoint to the map which you cannot do. In the upper section of the left window create a file list under My Collection. (Highlight My Collection and from the drop down menu select File/New/List and give it an appropriate name.) Now highlight the new list and search for the address, create a waypoint and you should be all set.

By the way I recommend that you install the map to your computer. You can do this using Garmin Express. With the maps installed on you PC you will not need to connect your GPS to use the map and it will redraw faster.

BaseCamp is a very good program but it can have a steep learning curve for some folks. Once you have a handle on My collection works the rest is relatively straightforward.

The tutorial linked in my signature is very helpful. It is designed for motorcyclists but the basics are the same and it will give you a good basic understanding of the various aspects of BaseCamp.

Well it works for me and Breezly so you must be doing something wrong. Exactly how are you selecting the NA map?

However, I have discovered that since I have found that address using the "Find Addresses" function and designated it as a waypoint, BC will now find it if I use the search box at the top right. I tried that box several times yesterday before I had designated that address as a waypoint and BC would NOT find it. The only method that worked yesterday was the "Find/Find Addresses" tool.

Have you tried using the "Trip Planner" tool? Can you confirm that BC refuses to recognize that address and others near it listed on the NA map as POIs when using that tool?

Well I'm unsure why it's not working for you but it does for me, and you certainly don't need to designate it as a waypoint before it will find it. I was perhaps thinking that for some reason it wouldn't work using a map from a device, but I've just confirmed using a nuvi with the NA map that it does indeed work.

Anyway, I'll now move onto your next issue.
