I geocache using an Oregon 600. I download my caches (.gpx file) onto my navi using GSAK. When I connect to basecamp, I see all my waypoints and routes but no caches. Any idea what’s wrong?
OK, the GSAK guys say default format for GSAK to the Oregon 600 is .ggz and not .gpx. I can change the file extension in the GSAK settings to .gpx I like to filter in GSAK before sending to my navi.
I am a little puzzled as to why Garmin dropped the wherigo function. I have a funny feeling there is politics brewing between Garmin and Ground Speak. Garmin are also promoting their own free caching site where you can copy and paste all your your existing geocaching.com caches. Cell phones match most Garmin features these days and they are only going to get better at it. I dont believe cutting features and charging more is not the way forward.
GGZ files allow you to store almost unlimited number of caches on your Oregon 600 and are indexed for faster retrieval. Ironically, they are a Garmin invention but Basecamp has not caught up. When do you think BaseCamp will be able to view GGZ files.
The reason is that because the way BaseCamp works it would have to load every cache in the file. Since ggz files can contain up to 4 million caches, BC would simply crash on such an amount. Of course they could handle them in the same way as POI files, but then you won't be able to view them all or edit them; something users would expect.
