Is it possible to create a route in ride with GPS and then send it to my etrex 20?

Here is what I have:
Garmin etrex 20
Apple OSx 10.705

Here is what I want to do:
Click where I am, click where I want to go.

Ideally I would like it to route be back with as little backtracking (traveling the other way on the same road) as possible.
Get a route with onscreen indicators of what I should do (the purple line)

Here is what I tried:
I have generated a route in map my ride, I didn't use basecamp because base camp, apparently, cannot follow roads; I had to click (and wait up to 20 minutes as bascamp calculated a straight line) and then at each bend of the road click along the bend. I tried to create a route about 2km long, it took about 3 hours to do it.

That didn't work so I used ride with GPS. In ride with GPS I created a route; but, it exports as gpx, which the etrex 20 will not see as a route, it sees it as a track.

When I try to turn it to a route in basecamp it, quite frankly, gets lost.

What I want is a route, not a track. However, I also want directions that do not look like the mess in the second picture.

If this cannot be done:
Is there a way to just create a waypoint on the map in basecamp and let the routing in the gps itself try to get me there?
  • Basecamp will follow roads, assuming you have a routeable map. Your Etrex 20 probably doesn't so direct routing is your only option, or you could experiment with OSM maps.

If you use direct routing you won't get on screen directions.
  • Fortunately the place went today was on the preloaded "places of interest" list. So, I selected it and let it calculate a route that followed the roads.

Then after riding for a while I selected my home from the way-points and let it calculate a road route back. The usual "stay left" type of prompts appeared as I approached a Y in the road.

So, I see that routing works if the way-point, or destination, is already in the device. Is there a way to create a way-point, or destination, without actually being at the place? As in, can I feed it a set of coordinates and create a named way-point or destination?

As it is, it works for:
Getting me to places that are in the pre-loaded list of "places of interest"
Getting me back home (I set home as a named way-point).
Getting me to places I have been to and have named as a way-point.

I would like to be able to use it to get to places I have not been to before, and are not in the pre-loaded "places of interest" list. To do this, as I see it, I need to set a way-point on a map without actually going to that place first. Can this be done?

    If so, how?

To let you know, I am using base camp 4.2.4
To make it clear why I cannot place way-points using basecamp, look at this screenshot. . . well, I would show a screenshot; but it exceeds my quota. What I have is a map that is
    1. in Chinese (makes sense, I am in China)
    2. so cluttered with little ikons that I cannot even see any roads. The entire map is covered by various tiles that indicate various useless things.

I can find the things that interest me on services like Google maps and ride with GPS; but, how do I put those locations into my Garmin etrex?
  • OK, so you do have a routeable map. Which one is it?

If you have Garmin's City navigator map installed you can do a Where to, Address or Where to, City etc

To set a waypoint on a map to navigate to just scroll to where you want to go to then press Enter (on joystick) twice then select Go
