Recalculating a route sent from BaseCamp

I just order a 3579LMTHD in the hopes it would act as the Garmin Montana and not recalculate Routes. SUSSAMB directed me to the post on the BaseCamp windows forum shown at the bottom of this post. Rick at GPSPassion Nuvi has been very helpful but now where can I confirm Falagar supposedly statement.

First question is about recalculating routes. It appears to me the route must be recalculated, if not you have a track. I think the issue is changing the route. Does anyone know if the BaseCamp is sending all the route preferences/settings info to the Montana such that the Montana can calculate the same route?

Second question, 3579 can import trips but at this point in time a trip with 4 day routes imports as 4 trips with a route each day. Does this mean I will have to have any routes I want to send to the 3579 be included in a trip?

Thanks

It's not really the same thing, BaseCamp creates normal routes with Trip Planner. The idea is that eventually these trip planner (BaseCamp trip planner) trips will be able to be sent to the Nuvi as trips (with vias intact, no recalculation of the route).

For the time being, routes you create with trip planner will be sent to the Nuvi the same way you'd send a route now.

I haven't verified it, but supposedly the new generation of Nuvis already do not recalculate routes from BaseCam
  • To match BaseCamp, the route should not be recalculated by the device. Unfortunately I do not have the list of devices that don't recalculate. BaseCamp sends some of the attributes, like activity, but not the actual preferences. It turns out that even if it did, the device and desktop will calculate different routes because of platform differences like memory available to do the calculation. It is my understanding that the Montana does not recalculate a route if you tell it not to.

The device does not have the concept of multi-day trips yet. So each day of your trip is represented by it's own route which may or may not look like 4 different trips (using your example) depending on your device.
  • Thanks Azdrmn,

Most people are the nuvi 2013 line does not recalculate the routes. I will post in a few days after mine arrives. I assume BaseCamp is sent waypoionts as opposed to a track. If the device does not recalculate the route where does it get the route?
  • Most devices don't take tracks and make routes from them. BaseCamp sends the route and all the waypoints in the route to the device. Though some devices don't support the route natively, they all support routing to waypoints, aka "favorites", aka "saved".
