how to view maps from Streetpilot 2720 in Basecamp

I'm at my wits end here. The SP 2720 does not have a usb mass storage mode which I believe is required for Basecamp to read the maps off the device. How can I get the maps off my 2720 and into Basecamp so I can use it?

thank you
  • I don't think you can access the existing maps with that device. The only way I'm aware of is to purchase a map update and choose to instal it to both GPS and computer. HTH

Do you have the map that is installed on the 2720 also installed on the computer?? I've had a 2720 for years (way before Basecamp came out) and have used Mapsource to create routes on the PC and download to the 2720.

Course, if you never did this and don't have the 2720 map version on the PC, then, as Killtimer says, you're probably out of luck without a new map install to the PC.

Did the 2720 come with maps on CD/DVD? If so the OP can use that to install the maps onto a PC. If the 2720 came with pre-installed maps (like nuvi's do) then Killtimer has the only solution.
  • I'm pretty sure the 2720 install disk had PC only maps.... I'm assuming the OP is running a Mac.

Is there a way for me to get the maps either off my 2720 or off my PC and load them into my Mac?

    Perhaps.

This will work. A couple of hints from my experience. When given the option to "archive" (if it still exists, it was problematic) do not select the option, accept the larger file. Turn off your screensaver if you're running one. I can't find a logical explination for needing to do this but I had to for at least one map. Be prepared to run the program and install the maps on your Mac more than once. One of my topo maps took three tries. Be patient.
  • With JaVaWa GMTK: http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html
Create a backup of the map with the Windows version of GMTK, and restore it with the Mac version.
(This even works with maps that aren't Mac-compatible)
  • I am having the same frustrating problem with my 2730 and my BMW Navigator IV [Zumo] as well. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get maps installed on my computer so that I can route plan without having to have the GPS connected to the computer. If I connect the Navigator IV to the computer it's maps will at least show up on the Basecamp Maps list, not so with the 2730. I don't get it! After I disconnect the Navigator IV the detail maps disappear and I'm left with only the Global Map!

What makes this doubly frustrating is that I previously had detail maps of North America installed on my computer, but after an update those maps have disappeared from the map list and now the only way I can access them is to connect the GPS.

I have followed the Map Installation instructions to the letter but the detail maps DO NOT install.

Yeah, I am at my wits end with this too. So many wasted HOURS!

    Any suggestions?
  • This is the third time you've asked this question, please don't triple or even double post. See here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?35320-BaseCamp-missing-map
  • Thanks SUSSAMB,

Yeah, I don't normally cross-post multiple question . . . but it is a measure of the frustration, desperation and also a little annoyance with the updating/download process . . . I was feeling at the time.

    Anyway . . .

. . . a miracle has occurred . . . I was able to finally download the Detail Map to my computer. I was able to download the Detail Maps to the computer after connecting my 2730 GPS to the computer. The 2730 had North America 2013 installed, when I used GarminMapUpdater to update to the 2014 version of North America a dialog box appeared that gave me the option of downloading to both the GPS and the Computer, which is what I selected, and lo and behold after the process was over there was the detail map on my computer. A miracle!

Now, that I have the Detail Map on my computer I'm mostly happy again. But now, to save space, I want to reinstall just the USA and Canadian maps as opposed to the entire North America detail maps on my BMW Navigator IV but I can't figure out how to do so. Now, when I connect the Navigator to the computer and use either Garmin Express or MapUpdater they say the maps are up to date and no option for re-installing is offered. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help!
