Mixed routes

How can I create a mixed route in base camp that has segments that follow roads or trails and segments that go cross country (direct)? Think of cutting across a switch back. Then I want to transfer the route to my Oregon 450 and not have it recalculate to all roads. I'm going to follow this route on horseback.

Thanks guys for the interesting conversation. I tried Drtbyk's work around in BC and could not make it work (is cmd-Z the same as ctrl-Z?). It changed my route to either all direct or all auto. It's pretty convoluted in any case and raises a related question. How does BC decide which roads are routeable? I'm using Garmin's 24K topo maps and my auto route followed the roads on the map until I came to a 1/4 mile section that showed on the map. When I tried to route that section, BC sent me back the way I came in a 7 mile mile loop. Not useful in planning my horseback ride. Why does it do that?

By the map you're using. If there's auto-routing data in the map BC can use it otherwise all you get is direct routes.

    I'm using Garmin's 24K topo maps..,

Those contain routing data for roads and "trails".

As to your looping problem it could be an error in the map or how you're trying to create the route.

PS: I'm pretty sure the Oregon 450 (I have one too) doesn't support mixed routes. Obviously the 60Cx/60CSx/76Cx/76CSx don't. I doubt my 1490T does either.

Commad-Z is not the same as Control-Z in Mac-BC. Not sure why the mixed-route process I outlined didn't work for you. Others have had no problem.

As for the map section of road not routing for you, you might check your routing preferences to see if you have "Feature Avoidances: Seasonal Road Closures" checked. If that doesn't fix it, most likely as STUARTMW noted there is missing road data in the map. If you set a waypoint at that location in 24K Topo and post it here in a GPX file we can check it for you.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess my friends that use GPSMAP 60/76 Series units must have just used Direct Routing and never complained. I will check on the Oregon 600 Series. I know for certain (I have them) that the GPSMAP 276c/376/478, zumo 550/660/665 and the Montana Series 600 do support Mixed Travel (mixed-routes) because they do not recalculate routes transferred directly to the internal storage by MS/BC.

Woops! I posted this to a Mac forum didn't I. Sorry, I have a PC. I guess it doesn't matter though whether I can get a mixed route in BC if my Oregon 450 is going to change it anyway. I have another error to confess. The leg of my route where BC took me in a 7 mile loop did not have a road on the map, just on the world in real life. Sorry.
