Mixed routes

How can I create a mixed route in base camp that has segments that follow roads or trails and segments that go cross country (direct)? Think of cutting across a switch back. Then I want to transfer the route to my Oregon 450 and not have it recalculate to all roads. I'm going to follow this route on horseback.

I don't know about your Oregon and it's ability to not recalculate the route when Transferred but try the following and then transfer the route to the Oregon's internal storage via Send to Device in BaseCamp.

    If you're using v4.1.2, to create a mixed-route:

    • Start by using one of the Along-road Activity's to map your route.
    • When you come to a segment where your want to go "off-road" on the map, just move the cursor over to the Route in your List and select it. Open the Route Info window and change the Activity to Direct.
    • The Route on the map will change to a Direct Route but don't worry, just use the Cmd-Z (undo) and the Route will revert back to the Along-road route you had before. Now with the Activity still set to Direct the next via point you place will be in Direct Activity mode.
    • Continue placing your via points until you get back to a routable road on the Map.
    • When you want to go back to Along-road routing, just change the Activity in the Route Info window and you're Along-road routing again. But, you'll notice that all of the route was recalculated - DON'T PANIC! ;). Just press cmd-Z (Undo) and continue routing. You can repeat the steps above as many times as you like to create your route.

V4.2 when released will make this a much easier workflow. The current public-beta has some issues but it can be made to work.

I don't think there's any model that handles mixed routes (direct + auto) yet. I haven't tried it with my 450 but I suspect the whole route will be recalculated when you use it.

Not true. The old GPSMAP x76 (276C, 376, 478) units did as wells as the GPSMAP 60CSx series. The Montana does and I would hope that the newer Oregon's do was well. You have to transfer the route from BaseCamp to the units internal storage. When you select the route on the GPS and "View Map" and then press "GO", it may look like it is recalculating but hold your breadth, it should render the route as you intended. My Montana works very well at this.

Forgot to include the zumo 66x units support mixed-routes as well if loaded to internal storage directly from BaseCamp.

Hmmm, last time I tried it was a few years ago with my 76CSx. I had a mixed route in MapSource and the unit recalculated the "direct" section I had created.

I still have the GDB file containing that route so I'll give it a try.

Most of the brand development teams didn't support this overtly. Customers requested that the GPS unit NOT recalculate a Route transferred to the unit via MS or BC. I think it was around v3.60 of the Montana software that this support came.

I recreated and transferred a mixed route, in MapSource, to my 76CSx. When I try and "Navigate" the route I get two popup options: Follow Road and Off Road. Choosing Follow Road recalculates the route that goes around the direct section. Choosing Off Road creates a direct route from the route waypoints--that is it doesn't follow the road.

If you can tell me how to create a mixed route and make it work I'd be interested. The route (in a GDB file) is attached.

Based upon your experience, I would say the GPSMAP 76 does not support the concept of not recalculating a transferred route. Here is a screenshot of your attached route on my Montana.

Well the 60Cx/60CSx and 76Cx/76CSx are functionally identical (except for some small differences that don't count here). They share the same firmware.

I don't own a Montana or a newer Oregon (6xx ?) so they may indeed allow mixed routing.

FYI the Montana screen capture doesn't show, close up, the section of the route that's recalculated by my 76CSx, There's a direct route section that crosses Woodruff Rd @ Carolina Point Pwky. Garmin's maps (for many years) don't include the small section that crosses Woodruff to connect directly to the I-85 ramp. It's there--I drove it many times.

(Unfortunately I'm out of attachment (images etc) space on this site so I can't upload my own images without deleting others.)

    Mixed Travel in v4.2.x

If we were to create a mixed-route (Mixed Travel) in BaseCamp with v4.2.x when it is released we'd see a route like this...

And on the Montana (or other GPS' that support navigating saved/transferred routes without recalculating) it would look like this...

    Thanks for posting.

The BaseCamp screen capture clearly shows that there no road from Woodruff to the I-85 ramp although one exists and has for many years. One can verify that by going to

    N34.827928 W82.300815

in Google Earth/Maps and zooming in.

Of course models that support mixed routes won't recalculate around that missing section :)
