micro SD preloaded card map not showing in Garmin BaseCamp

I have a nuvi 2595 LMT. I bought a micro SD with a pre-loaded European maps (Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2012 Map Card MicroSD/SD). I have BaseCamp version 3.3.2 installed. In BaseCamp under devices, the micro SD is displayed as a folder listed as 'Memory Card' but it does not recognize the European maps. The 'City Navigator North America' which came with the product is recognized.

I've seen older posts which recommended various actions to try to get the European map recognized in BaseCamp but nothing I tried seemed to help (such as putting the maps on a memory stick in the 'garmin folder', having just that on my PC without connecting my Garmin, or trying to find the North America maps to rename.

I think BaseCamp is meant to be able to see the Europe maps as installed on the pre-loaded micro SD card. Is this true? If so, can someone give me advice on how to make this work? Is there a different workaround I can employ to set up my trip to Europe (other programs, etc)?

Thank you.
Audrey
  • I followed the advice in this thread and all my maps could then be seen by Basecamp: https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=108922&postcount=7

    Warning!

This will probably work differently with maps which were bought on a SD card - those maps can not be copied/backed up the same way as maps which are created by the dvd version of Garmin maps because they have a lock/copy protection system built in.

I'd be very careful about this - you could easily screw up the maps so that your gps no longer recognizes them.

It may be worth asking in the thread I linked to see what the consensus is there on how safe the process is with SD maps.
  • Those maps can be backed up/restored. The only thing is that you cannot copy/restore them to another SD card, only the original one, because the maps are locked on the ID of the SD card.

The visibility of the maps in BaseCamp can be set with JaVaWa Device Manager (and you can also backup your maps with it)

Right, I forgot about Javawa. Thanks for the reminder. Speaking of JaVaWa Device Manager, version 1 was not working properly for me but 1.1 which I downloaded this morning does work, and now allows me to set the Basecamp visibility of my maps.

It looks much more powerful than GMapTool, now that I can see it working.

    Thanks!

Tried Javawa and GMAPTOOL without Success

Thank you for both responses. Unfortunately, neither approach worked for me.

With regard to Javawa, it did not recognize my garmin when attached and scanned. When I copy the contents of the micro SD chip to a USB memory stick, it does find this. However, when I request it make it visible to basecamp, it gives me a warning that 'it is not unlocked for the linked device and cannot be used'. It does write a .jdminfo folder with a GARMIN_GMAPSUPP file in it. I copied this folder to both the garmin internal storage and microsd but this didn't make the european maps visible in BASECAMP.

I don't know if it's significant, but when I attach the Garmin, it is not assigned a drive letter. I can see the contents using windows explorer but my windows search doesn't find files etc on it.

    I am running Windows 7.

Any other thoughts, suggestions, things to try?

    Thanks,
    Audrey
  • JDM doesn't recognize your nüvi because the nüvi uses the Media Transfer Protocol rather than the USB Mass Storage Mode. It is possible to switch modes: https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=121993&postcount=2

It's true that JDM gives a warning (not an error), but that shouldn't prevent changing the visibility. As for the .jdminfo folder: JDM keeps track of changes, but the nüvi doesn't do anything with these files (they're only for JDM). Copying these files to the SD card doesn't change anything; gmapsupp.img is the one you should copy.
However, it's better not to copy files; instead change to USB Storage Mode and try again.

Able To Turn On Mass Storage Mode; Map Still Not Visible After JaVaWa Update

I was able to turn on mass storage given your instructions (thanks) and when I initiate JaVaWa with the nuvi connected, it now finds the Europe map on the SD card. I then invoke the 'make visible to BC' button. However, Basecamp still does not see the maps after doing this.

I suspect the controlling bit is already on in the img file because when I look at the basemapp.img file on the micro SD after updating, the file 'date modified' attribute has not been changed to the new date (as seen through windows explorer) and yet when I select the map in JaVaWa and select the info tab, the output states the map should be visible as follows:

    Visible in BaseCamp:

Yes, as City Navigator Europe NT 2012.4

Thanks again for the help. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I don't know why it isn't working...
Could you create an online report with JDM ('Extra' > 'Report') and send me the link?

    JDM report pointer

Here is the pointer for the requested report

    Thanks, Audrey
  • The report isn't complete (not your fault, I chose the wrong size for the field in the online database; it's corrected now).
Could you create the report again? The link remains the same.

I see something strange: the file gmapsupp.img seems to contain two maps, one with no name and Family ID 250; this map has one map segment. The other map is CN EU 2012.40 (fam ID 2563) with 388 map segments; just as expected. Can somebody else with a preinstalled NT EU SD card verify this?
