Garmin Nuvi - Crashes trying to Import Route From File (created in BaseCamp)

Good Morning, all. I'm having a fair amount of trouble with my Garmin Nuvi 550.

I've created a route (with only 16 via points) in BaseCamp for Mac and transferred it to my Nuvi. But...every time I try to "Import Route From File," the Nuvi crashes. I've read that others on the internet have experienced this problem (and heard confirmation of said issue from Garmin themselves), but I wanted to refresh the discussion and see if any solution has been developed.

I.e., will using BaseCamp for Windows avoid this?
Do I need to create the routes in BaseCamp -> export to RoadTrip -> then import to the Nuvi?
Does this problem only affect the Nuvi line (so if I were so inclined to spend $500+ for a Zumo, I'd be free of this?)

Is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks very much!
  • It also happens in Basecamp for Windows..
Tried it with 2 Nuvi 550's.
1 doesn't have the problem, the other one has.
When I deleted the GPX folder, then it will go perfect for just 1 time.
It looks like a combination of some Nuvi 550's and Basecamp.
Also with a Zumo 210 it sometimes goes wrong....

The few times this has happened with my zumo 660 it turns out that there are the following issues causing it:

    1) different map version in the GPS and on my Mac.

    2) "shaping" or via points which are not indexed properly when the GPS tries to recalc the route during import.

The cure for #1 is to make sure you are using the same map version -- BaseCamp allows this even if no maps are installed on your computer.

For #2, try not to use shaping points. Instead, force the desired route using "real" waypoints instead of dragging the route, and be careful that they are placed properly so they don't create nonsense loops, such as accidentally putting a waypoint on the southbound side of a divided highway when you want to be traveling north.

  • My Nuvi 1450 was freezing or cutting off the power with certain routes I uploaded from BaseCamp. It had the problem when I first got the GPS, after many resets, trashing GPX folder, etc. it started working for a couple of month. Then it started again. It froze or cut off on the same routes that it had uploaded in the past. I keep calling Tech support and finally the sent me a new unit. The new unit has performed flawless on the same BaseCamp routes that killed the previous unit.

    Tried both these points...still crashes...
  • Have you tried a full reset, erasing user data? There may be a corrupt file in there in an area of memory that is not user-accessible. Be sure to save your Favorites first.

    Try the following:

    • Remove your microSD Card
    • Master Reset - but shutdown at the firts Setup screen (Language).
    • Reinstall the latest Software version.
    • At boot, complete Setup.

Leave your microSD card out of the unit and download your offending Route.

I'll try this. I don't use a microSD card...I assume that I just do the steps sans MicroSD stuff?

Sure, but remember to delete all of your data from the GPS before you start the procedure above.

    Cheers,

Hmm, this didn't work, but I noticed that after the hard reset and the firmware reinstallation that my favorites and routes were still in the Nuvi's memory. I don't have an SD card. Is this normal?
