Basecamp route detail wrong 60csx

Another classic newbie question, I suppose. Don't ask me why I was talked into buying the 60Csx at REI the other day - well, I guess the truth was I can't really afford the newer models . . .

Anyway, after installing Basecamp (and then fixing the crash-on-load problem), I started happily playing with the software. I set some waypoints, made a few routes (24k southwest area maps), set some tracks. Not the greatest user interface, but it works. I plugged in the 60Csx, and to my surprise, I was able to transfer the waypoints and routes! Yay!

But when I look at those routes on my 60Csx, I see that they don't actually follow the trails, like they did in basecamp. As I zoomed into the map, it seems the routes I saved were a series of straight lines that didn't follow the little trails on the topo - being off by anywhere from 50 to 300 feet.

Any reason why this is happening? Basecamp is accessing very well-trodden trails in the Sandia Mountains here, so the topo data for the trails theoretically shouldn't be off . . .

Thanks in advance for the help - it's probably something simple, right?

Probably not, AZDRMN address this a couple of weeks ago but I can't remember enough to find the post. Basically Garmin GPSs must recalculate the route from the given waypoints. BaseCamp and the GPSs in the beginning used the same algorithm for calculating the route so if you can set the same preferences in BaseCamp and on your GPS you should get the same route. As Garmin introduces newer devices, the routing algroithm get improved and BaseCamp get updated but the older devices usually don't get the updates. The older the device, the greater the probable the routes will be different. By adding waypoints to the routes, you can improve the odds of getting the same route.

The cause straight lines is just a guess on my part but I think routes are vectors, that is straight lines between points on the route. With older devices that had less memory, Garmin is probable using less points to define the route which become noticeable as you zoom in for the highest zoom levels. The is also a preference for direct routing which is straight lines between waypoints but I don't think this is the issue for you.

    Yup. It's the older device

So, the skinny from tech support is:

"Set a bunch of waypoints, the auto-route function will not transfer from Basecamp to the 60Csx".

I still like the price and the functionality. Tracks do transfer, which is at least a work-around. I may just stick with this device for a year or two, so I can learn it well, before upgrading to something "really cool".

  • I can't remember for sure but I think you can get your route in your 60Csx by choosing preferences in BaseCamp that match your 60Csx, using waypoints to shape your route and uploading the waypoints to your GPS. Create a route using the start and end waypoint and insert the remaining waypoints in the route using the via function. BaseCamp has an automatic function to convert routes to tracks which might be a workaround.
