Auto Routing with offroad segments

I'm using Basecamp to plan a 2000 mile motorbike trip, some on national forest trails. I'm using the TOPO 24k maps.

There are some places where I need to get between two trails which don't meet on the TOPO maps, but which do join in reality. When I place waypoints and use 'Make New Route' to create a route from the waypoints, Auto Routing is thrown off by these segments - it doubles back and goes around in circles.

Is there a way in Basecamp to make a route where 99% of the route is Auto Routed but with a few custom hand-drawn segments that are routed by me directly? (I tried drawing a Trail but that doesn't work). Or is there a way to 'edit' the underlying maps to add a new trail that is not shown?

Right now my workaround is to break my route into multiple segments, which is a pain. Any other solution?

Thanks

Jon

This hack works on the PC: https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=83709&postcount=5, and I just verified it works on the Mac as well.

Just switch to the Global map for the direct route segments (while still using the route tool) and then switch back to your normal map when the direct route segment is done.

    Don't recalculate, of course.

This hack works on the PC...

I've used the same trick, for many years, in MapSource. It works well for shortish routes but I'd hate to try it for a 2,000 mile route. I'd create multiple routes as they're easier to maintain and you'll take breaks anyway.

BTW if you make a mistake while using this hack use Ctrl-Z to undo the last segment (mistake) rather than starting the route again.

PS: I recently used the hack to create a route for a trail in a US Topo 24K map where there's a small, and invisible, break that prevents autorouting along the complete trail. That said my 76CSx tries to autoroute around that break so the hack was only useful on my PC so I ended up breaking the route in two.

As STUARTMW mentioned, make shorter routes - certainly easier to manage if something needs to change in-route.

Personally, I much prefer using Tracks and Waypoints when I'm off-highway (and sometimes on-highway). Your GPS won't "recalculate" a track and it won't care what maps you developed the Track on. ;)
