Europe City Navigator SD Card No Show In Basecamp

I know this has been questioned and answered many times but I still can find a definite answer.

I have the Edge 800 running the latest firware/software with the latest Europe City Navigator NT 2011 on an SD card. Genuine Garmin map, not a copy or downloaded via torrent etc. My Mac has all the latest Garmin software including what is rapidly turning out to be my nemesis, Basecamp.

By all accounts I should just be able to plug my Edge into my Mac and view the detailed maps on the SD card in Basecamp. But I can't!

I've contacted customer support who told me to do the above and leave it for a while as the first time load could be lengthy. I left it for hours but no joy.

It's as though Basecamp can't see the SD card in my Edge 800.

When I plug my Edge into my Mac it mounts the unit as a drive called Garmin and the SD card as a drive called untitled.

I can see all the files in both 'drives' in Finder including the all important GMAPSUPP.IMG file on the SD card which I presume is my City Navigator map.

Basecamp can see the Edge 800, it shows up on the left hand column along with the Intl. Autoroute map which is on the Edge (very basic world map) but no sign of the installed SD card and the map on it.

I've left the Edge plugged in as advised for ages but still no sign of any City Navigator map moving anywhere.

It's driving me nuts as I'm really pleased with the Edge as a whole but I want to plan my own routes the way you should be able to with Garmin's software.

Somebody please help! :(
  • I much prefer to install, City navigator on the computer so I can plan routes without connecting my gps. If you downloaded the map from garmin, you can easily install the map on your computer.
  • How does one 'install' the map from the Edge 800's SD card to the computer?

I think it's the other way around: you install the map from the DVD or download to your Mac and then start /Applications/Garmin MapInstall.

Connect your Garmin device to your Mac (USB)

The MapInstall software will default by opening your Garmin device and show you the installed map. If you have a SD card in the device you choose 'Go back' at the lower right in MapInstall. From there you can choose a 'different device' and select a SD card from the pulldown menu. Then proceed to select a part or all of the map and sent it to your 'device'

I feel a bit guilty now. Turns out I had a dodgy copy of City Navigator. It was bought as a present for me from Amazon Marketplace so beware.

I ended up buying the UK maps as a download from Garmin. This wasn't without its problems though! You have to plug your Edge in and you then have the choice to download to either the memory on the Edge or the SD card within the Edge. My unit didn't have enough room so I chose to download it onto the card. All good or so I thought.

After downloading, disconnecting and switching on the unit, no maps! I then connected the Edge back to the Mac (and saw that the maps were actually on the SD card in Finder) with Basecamp running and voila, the maps appeared within Basecamp with all the detail etc..

Unplugged again and no maps loaded on the Edge! Great, the complete opposite problem from when I initially started. After much searching it turns out you have to rename the three downloaded files from 2011.40UK something or other to gpsmapupp with their respective extensions img, sum, and unl.

Connected the Edge, changed the filenames in Finder, disconnected and booted up the Edge and hey presto, the UK maps in all their glory!

Connected the Edge back up and Basecamp loaded the maps no problem, they just automatically appear when you select them within the program. Only problem is that they are quite slow to render when moving about the screen. Got round this by copying the files to a spare SD card and using a card reader. Rendering and searching is so much quicker this way. By all accounts you can copy the files as a disk image, mount this as a external drive/SD card and this makes the maps even quicker to use within Basecamp.

I don't think you can actually install the maps on your Mac. Anyway, happy days!
  • You should be able to easily install maps you download on your mac. Go back to the garmin page. Garmin will allow you to download the maps again. The garmins map install application has an option called advance. Click advance and you will find a box to check which installs the maps on the mac. You have to plug your GPS again and it may reinstall, not sure if you have an option to not install.
