BaseCamp Crashing

Hi - new to the forum, glad I found it!

I just got an Oregon 550t and I dropped a few more dollars for the US West 24k Topo DVD. I was disappointed to see that the program used on the Mac to control it, BaseCamp, is a BETA product. This wouldn't be a bad thing if it were stable. However, it has been on my iMac for less than 48 hours and has crashed at least ten times. Sometimes it abends when I am just sitting there looking at the screen. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the BaseCamp forced itself on installation to version 2.0.1. I can deal with the Korean characters that sporadically appear on certain mouse-overs, but these crashes are really ugly...

Is anyone else having these crash problems?

Well,in the case of the repeated crashing of BaseCamp on my iMac, i have never ejected any sort of memory stick, so the software is able to do it to itself without the aid of memory stick ejection! :(

Spoke with a Tech Support rep today - he did the upgrade on his copy of BaseCamp, and sure enough - his software crashed, too. Recommended using RoadTrip until the next, non-Beta version of BaseCamp is available, some time in early 2010. Guess that's what I'll have to do...

I have just discovered that I can crash BaseCamp every time if I try to change a Waypoint symbol. Anyone else have this same problem?

    I'm running SL v 10.6.2.

Yes, I have this same problem, but it is inconsistent. The default icon when creating a new waypoint appears to be the "blue flag." When I try to change it to a more appropriate icon, Basecamp will sometimes crash. Sometimes I can select a new waypoint icon just fine, but if I try to select that icon again for another waypoint, Basecamp mostly crashes.

I'm not an experienced Mac user, but here is what I believe is the relevant portion of the crash log:

  • Possible Workaround/Clue to Waypoint Icon Selection Crash

OK, I've been fooling around with BaseCamp trying to figure out a way to change waypoint icons without crashing. I think I have found a way, but would need more testing to be certain...

    Workaround/Clue
I've added/modified about a dozen waypoint icons without a problem, then made a slight change the process which resulted in BaseCamp crash.

In order to successfully change waypoint icons, make sure you have the "Selector Tool" engaged before you view the waypoint properties to change the waypoint icon.

In order to induce a crash, make sure you have the "Hand Tool" engaged before you view the waypoint properties to change the waypoint icon.

Yes, I can duplicate the crash and non-crash with the 'Hand Tool' and 'Select Tool' respectively chosen.

One other thing that I found is that if I change the symbol of a Waypoint successfully with 'Select Tool' chosen, as long as BasCamp hasn't been quit and restarted, I can change the symbol again for the same waypoint with the 'Hand Tool' selected and BaseCamp won't crash BUT if I try and change the symbol of another Waypoint (with the 'Hand Tool' still selected), BaseCamp will again crash.

Seems there must be some sort of a pre-set state when BaseCamp opens that causes the crash but is modified when a Waypoint symbol is successfully changed.
  • This is a known issue related to changing the symbol on waypoints. This will be fixed in the upcoming release. Thank you for taking the time to figure out a work around.
  • Thanks for the work around. I have been using BBedit to change the <sym> text and figured I was causing BaseCamp to crash.

My work around for single changes was to keep trying and crashing until it worked. It is much easier to just select the pointer. before you change.
