BaseCamp Crashing

Hi - new to the forum, glad I found it!

I just got an Oregon 550t and I dropped a few more dollars for the US West 24k Topo DVD. I was disappointed to see that the program used on the Mac to control it, BaseCamp, is a BETA product. This wouldn't be a bad thing if it were stable. However, it has been on my iMac for less than 48 hours and has crashed at least ten times. Sometimes it abends when I am just sitting there looking at the screen. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the BaseCamp forced itself on installation to version 2.0.1. I can deal with the Korean characters that sporadically appear on certain mouse-overs, but these crashes are really ugly...

Is anyone else having these crash problems?

I'm having the same problem, I run the programm under the Snow lepard, too.

I hope the garmin could realese "stable & serious" update for 10.6 one day.

Just delete the preference file. It gets corrupted from time to time.

I'll give that a try. But, where is it located? I did some searching and was unable to locate it.
  • To find the preference file Go to your home directory
    /Users/your user name/Library/Preferences/com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist
Also if you mount or eject a memory stick, BaseCamp or RoadTrips will crash. I'm sure we will get an update soon to fix the issues. As long as I don't mound a usb memory stick (could be any volume, I have not checked), I have found BaseCamp to be very stable. I use the application several times a week and the feature list is very impressive.

Got it - thanks! I'm surprised that Spotlight didn't find it, as I told it to look for anything with Garmin. Guess maybe it had too much turkey & stuffing yesterday! I blasted that pref file - we'll see how long it takes till it crashes this time. I do like the app - just wish they'd put a little heat on the programmers to get these bugs fixed.

Well, that was an effort in futility. The application lasted about 20 minutes before crapping on itself again. Wasn't even using the computer at the time. Was off in the other room getting a glass of water. Came back to find the &*^%%$# termination message on the display. Sad, very sad indeed.

I would recommend making sure you have the latest version of BaseCamp. If you don't have it you can get it here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4450

Are you given the option to report the crash when it happens? It would be useful to take a look at the crash logs to see if we can help you out.

I am at version 2.0.1 - the version that is forced after installing the DVD that came with my purchase. I've clicked the Help->Check For Updates. It looks, then nothing happens, so I presume I am current. I have sent the report in on several occasions and was told to uninstall the software (I did that) and then re-install it, but not do the upgrade. However, as I mentioned in my reply to tech support (problem number KMM15046218I15977L0KM), there is no way to NOT install the upgrade. The software has been written so that the upgrade is MANDATORY. If you don't let it do the upgrade, it aborts startup of the app. Their response was to call a tech support agent on the phone, which I will most certainly do on Monday morning. In the mean time, I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem, or if it was unique to my install. Based on the response to my question, looks like it isn't just me!
  • BaseCamp will crash a 100% of the time if you mount or eject a usb memory stick. Because it was a 100% repeatable, I figured the developers would have a fix in the next update.

I found that mounting a USB Memory Stick crashed BaseCamp once but I have not been able to repeat this. I have never crashed BaseCamp when ejecting, nor have I ever crashed RoadTrip when mounting or ejecting.

Seems to me to be a bit weird and possibly not something that Garmin will necessarily address if they can't reproduce the problem.
