my gps worked ok with the latest apple OS (through thunderbolt USB hub)
My issue started after the latest basecamp update.

You "ran out of time" on the latest release?

Just to be clear your 748 was recognised (when connected via a USB2 hub) in BaseCamp after update to El Capitan with BaseCamp at the previous revision - 4.5.1?

478 (not 748), combo land and marine GPS with SONAR and Doppler weather RADAR capability

The only way my 478 would connect was through my Apple Thunderbolt connected monitor, which has 3 USB 2.0 ports. The Apple monitor is connected to the laptop using the Thunderbolt interface.

My Macbook Pro would not see the 478 through the laptop's USB 3.0 port.
I have had El Capitain since the beginning of November. I do not know which version of Basecamp I was using prior to downloading the latest version.

I have tried a couple of different USB hubs connected to the laptop's USB port, brand name, no name, powered by the bus, powered by a brick, and they do not work.
I have not tried a stand-alone USB hub that is connected through the Thunderbolt port. Mainly because they are very expensive.

I had some luck getting the eTrex Vista CX working, but it's still spotty with it communication to the device randomly dropping. I've had no luck with the older GPSmap devices. I'm not receiving any messages from the apple io service that monitors connections to USB ports. Unfortunately, I don't expect Apple to spend much time figuring out why older Garmin devices are not working any longer in the new OS X.

Sorry. I wish I could get these working for you all, but I've run out of time for this release.

Wurth pity you could not get a fix for the next release but have some understanding of time pressure of your role. Couple of things that may possibly help. I would very much like to try the 4.5.1 version on my El Capitan MBA - is there any way that I can revert for my current 4.5.2? Bit of a long shot but really need to touch all bases if no fix is on the horizon.

Secondly can you give me the technical terms regarding the "Apple io service" - not that I would expect an immediate response from them but I will lodge a report with Apple - it could be affecting other USB connected devices.

    Thanks

My searching has led me to it is not an Apple issue, rather that the older units cannot communicate via the USB 3.0 port.
    USB 2.0 only

Now that said. My 478 had no problem with the USB 2 through the Thunderbolt interface prior to this latest update.

Why is BaseCamp routing so rediculous

What's with the routing in BaseCamp v4.5.2, and why is it so ridiculous???

Having been brought an Edge 1000 for Christmas I asked Garmin Support what was the best way to prepare routes for downloading to the device, and was adviced to use BaseCamp. Downloaded BaseCamp, which in turn loads the Garmin Cycle Map 2015.10, and stated to plot a course but found the route selection between waypoints I select on the map takes ridiculous routes. The worst of which was that it wouldn't route around a roundabout to get to the other side, choosing to take a ridiculous route that involved riding up to the roundabout, performing a u-turn, riding some ridiculous detour to get to the other side of the roundabout, where again I perform a u-turn to continue along the route; and this is with enabling all types of roads/surfaces to be used. Unbelievable. Really unbelievable.

While I accept software may never be 100% - working in IT myself and knowing that most coders & companies do the least amount of work to get a product out the door - the quality of the BaseCamp coding/algorithms is beyond belief. Those involved in this product, and those that work for Garmin, should be ashamed of themselves. This is after all the 21st century and this substandard & second-rate product should not be distributed.

-10 out of 10 Garmin. Must try very, very, very much harder to make even the lowest of acceptable standard.

    Is it still so good?

Have only done a few basic tests -- create and modify routes -- but so far, so good.
    Thanks!

Out of interest, why do you think this product is so good given that when I try and plot a route the chosen route often seems ridiculous, even if I have no road/surface restrictions in place? What settings to you have, and how close do you have to plot waypoints to a meaningful route?
  • The issue is not BaseCamp but the map you're using. BaseCamp can only route you where the map allows it to.

I have numerous maps installed for BaseCamp to use. Some like OSM maps struggle to route correctly at times. Garmins own CN map routes very well.

I think the product is good because it performs well for me and allows me to plan intricate routes for 3000-mile motorcycle trips. I doubt very much that "settings" are the issue here. As for "how close," that varies from hundreds of miles to dozens of feet, depending on lots of variables such as divided road or not, intersections, road classifications and how far the built-in algorithms deviate from my preferred route. But a general answer is that I rarely need more than 10-12 "forcing" points for a full day of riding a complex route through mountains, for example.

I'm not familiar with the map you are using, but if it behaves the same way the CN NT series does, you need to be very careful where you put waypoints. Zoomed out it is way too easy to put one on the wrong side of a divided highway, for example, resulting in "spaghetti loops" and bizarre u-turns.

If you have decided BC is not for you, then feel free to ignore this. But if you want to make it work, may i suggest creating your routes this way: begin with only start and end points (which should never be identical). Let BC plot the route based on the routing prefs you set. Now add waypoints to "force" the route you want. Do some recalcs to make sure it survives the process. Do the same in your GPS.

    Hope this helps,

Wurth would still very much like to try 4.5.1 and have the outline technical info so can feed back to Apple? Surely the change by Apple is affecting other manufacturers devices not just "non USB mass storage" Garmin's?
  • I think the issue is a Garmin one not Apple. My 478 was the only usb device out of many that had an issue. I was informed by Garmin at the time I reported the problem that the earlier units were not currently and would never be fully USB 3 compliment on a MAC as there was no new firmware planned. I ended up selling the unit after I had exhausted every option I could think of, and I do mean everything.
