VIRB Edit 3.0 can be downloaded at http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591. Updating from inside the app should be available shortly.

A lot has changed since 2.9.

This is the official change list:

  • New, clearer application design and video editing timeline
  • Added support for duplicating, splitting, and trimming clips in the timeline via context menu
  • Added a new 'G-Metrix' tab to display what kind of data is available in the current clip's G-Metrix log

  • Added easy switching between clips recorded at the same time by automatically detecting and aligning videos that start and end within 4 seconds of each other
  • Added support for adding photos to videos
  • Added photo sharing
  • Added 'bookmark' camera icons in the video editing timeline for photos taken on VIRB X/XE cameras while a video clip was recording
  • Added support for multiple photo/clip selection in the Media Library to make it easier to delete or add multiple photos/clips at once

Is there anywhere where users can vote for priority of bugs and features? I do think this is a superior release (bugs aside), and sure would like to contribute with usecases with the community as well. Great work so far guys!

Thank you! We don't have a voting or priority system in place, but we sure would love to hear about your use cases and feature suggestions! Feel free to open up a new thread with your ideas.

We do read and collect them all, and will try to implement as many as we can. We won't get to do everything, unfortunately.

    Hi Falagar,

I just got a new desktop which exceeded all system requirements. I'm on windows 8.1 64 bit.

There first thing I did was to combine all my cycling videos. Two virb cams, front and rear view, so I did picture-in-picture using Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the same resolution and bitrate settings. This resulted in a 6.2GB (2.5hrs) single file.

Now I was expecting no issues importing this single file t Virb Edit 3, but no success. I installed 2.9.2 and I still can't import this 6.2GB file.

Why are there still file size limitations? It makes it a lot easier to deal with one single file. I record my cycling rides continously and its usually more than 2 hrs.

    Thanks and regards,
    Lukman

We are working on supporting files larger than 4GB, but due to technical limitations, it's not supported in the current version. I apologize for that.

    Now I found some things.
1 - the map is not shown in the preview window, so capuring the map while the video is playing is no option anymore.
Maybe I have not found the option to put te map in view again.

2 - the video's are put on the timeline in reverse order.
I started with an empty library and imported clips from the VIRB Elite.
(the clips are shown with the newest on the left)
I used "select all" to select all clips.
Than I selected (right click on the first clip) create video.
I changed the name of the video to be created and clicked on "create video".
The video is created but on the timeline starts with the newest video and ends with the oldest.
Sorting the video's with the oldes first looks to me a more logical way to get a less confused timeline.

3 - in the edit view the thumbs are also shown newest first where first (oldest) first would be expected.

4 - in the edit view the thumbs names are not fully shown, the prefix is there but the last (different) part is not shown.
Maybe a popup showing the full name could be added.

5 - I cannot move the slider on the timeline by moving the red dot on the map (worked in 2.9.2)

6 - the map disappears when I click on the timeline.

7 - the red dot on the map does not move with the (green) timeline cursor.

6 & 7 prevent me from using the map for finding the correct splitting and trimming point.

8 - On the selection Overlays the tabs (template, gauges...) are almost unreadable, black text on black background

9 - timeline thumbs are not created for some of the clips, when these are split thumbs also are not created.
checking if thumbs are created after a project (movie) is (re) opened, and creating thumbs at that point if thumbs are missing would help.

10 - I'm missing a timer that tells me how much seconds I am into the clip (in 2.9.2 I could see how long a scene would be)

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I'll answer what I can, and have our UX person chime in others.

    1. We took this out because too many people were confused and expected the map to show up in the exported video. Maybe removing it wasn't the best choice though. We'll look into that again.

    5. We have that already fixed internally, will work again in 3.1.

    6. Try clicking on the upper part of the timeline and it won't disappear.

    7. It should. We'll try to get that fixed.

    8. That works on my machine. Which OS are you using? Do you use a special UI theme?

    9. What kind of videos are you using? I haven't seen that.
  • Syncing GMetrix

What videos and GPS data are you using? Is this from VIRB Elite?

If you have a way to share the video and GPS data I'd love to take a look.

The videos and data all come out of my Virb Elite. I will try to get the file uploaded somewhere that you can get the data and let you know. I have not been able to get any of the videos to line up. Since the Virb records both the video and GPS it seems that they should automatically line up but that is not the case. I would understand if I took the tracks from my Etrex. Thanks!

    Hi FALAGAR,

Still using the "old" Win7 x64 Pro.
After restarting 3.0.1.0, slowly the missing thumbs are created so a "repair" seems to be in place.

6: I was trying to both have the dot adjusted on the map and select the clip as well. After that (with the clip selected) I would select edit to split or trim.
An option could be both the map and the trimming tools being available at the same time .... like 2.9.2.0 ?

    10: the missing clip timer.
In 2.9.2.0 on the same hight as "Last Imported"

    3.0.1.0 doesn't show this

Black on black, I'm using the "Windows Classic" theme.

I think we've narrowed down the non-changing gauges issue, and will roll out the fix in 3.1. ...
Take your time with this, peeps ... get it right. ;)

Another thing that would be usefull is "undo".
Undo the last operation would be very usefull when a trim has unexpected effects on the track.
If a clip was trimmed at both ends and you select clear trimming, you need to do both trims again.
With "Undo" you would only have to do just one.
Another method would be adding markers on the clips timeline that can be adjusted over and over again.

Power Director 13.0, trimming a clip

The blue box shows the scope of the timeline with thumbs (grey line is the total clip).
Yellow are the lead in/out markers.
The blue lines mark the part of the clip used in the movie.
The yellow markers can be moved over and over again.

We do support Undo and Redo. Ctrl-Z/Ctrl-Y. Or from the menu.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, PA3FBO!

    1. I see you've found the map. For Trim/Split, would keyboard shortcuts serve your purpose? We have some additional enhancements in the pipeline that I think you'll like.

    2. Reverse order media gallery items - Yeah, it's weird. We'll be changing that.

    8. Confirmed. We'll look into fixing that for the Windows Classic theme.

    10. We've got a total video timer below the video player, and one in the Edit tab that displays time for the selected clip (which is what I think you're looking for). We've considered adding that time display to the timeline hover cursor (green line). Is that more along the lines of what you'd expect?
  • I think we've narrowed down the non-changing gauges issue, and will roll out the fix in 3.1. What kind of videos are they? Which mode? From which camera?

Currently I own a GoPro 1 and am still waiting for a Virb XE release date in Germany.
I was trying to use the raw and also the cut (by GoPro Studio) mp4 Videos. The GPX File came from my Vivoactive (exported from Connect).

Off course, it´s not your desired video material :) I don´t want to replace the GoPro, I´d like to mount both cameras (the old Hero in the back & the XE onto the front) to my Motorbike, at the same time. Then combine the results, later on.

--I did that with a borrowed second camera, and it´s pain in the a** to combine the videos. In Virb Edit and also in GoPro Studio. The easiest way would be, to place the videos not after, but among each other. With a flag, you could choose which video will be active in a timeline. That also would make the G-Metrix synchronization more simple. At present you have to cut a lot of snippets and mix them up--
