VIRB Edit 3.0 can be downloaded at http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591. Updating from inside the app should be available shortly.

A lot has changed since 2.9.

This is the official change list:

  • New, clearer application design and video editing timeline
  • Added support for duplicating, splitting, and trimming clips in the timeline via context menu
  • Added a new 'G-Metrix' tab to display what kind of data is available in the current clip's G-Metrix log
  • Added support for VIRB X/XE action cameras
  • Added easy switching between clips recorded at the same time by automatically detecting and aligning videos that start and end within 4 seconds of each other
  • Added support for adding photos to videos
  • Added photo sharing
  • Added 'bookmark' camera icons in the video editing timeline for photos taken on VIRB X/XE cameras while a video clip was recording
  • Added support for multiple photo/clip selection in the Media Library to make it easier to delete or add multiple photos/clips at once
  • Added support for multiple video selection in the Gallery
  • Added support for gauges and graphs of OBD-II data
  • Added support for gauges displaying HRM-Run's running oscillation and stance time data
  • Playback now stops at final frame. Playing from this point restarts the video from the beginning.
  • Fixed compass 'bearing' gauges spinning while stopped
  • Fixed various G-Metrix alignment issues
  • Fixed various issue for users with non-standard characters in their user name.
  • One comment I'll make on the layout which may just be an issue for me, but why do the video library files/ thumbnails jump from the bottom of the page to the left side of the page when you click on "create video" now? (I realise the screen layout is now different, but why?). For me, once I have identified a video clip I would like to make into a movie, it moves and I have to go and look for it again as it is in a different place on the screen. Before the clips used to stay where they were and the edit window just opened above them.

Like I said, it might just be me, but my brain has a problem dealing with it! :)

We did remove this on purpose because we didn't find a compelling use case, and just seemed to complicate matters.

What is your use case? You can still export the gpx and fit files for each raw movie in the library.

No, this was a nice feature. e.g. when you make videos to reride them virtually on a smart trainer, it was nice to have a matching GPX file. Could you please add this again?

Greetings FALAGAR, my use case is as follows: I always export the full movie first (with no overlays) and take it into Final Cut Pro X for color balance and sometimes for angle correction whenever I attach the camera to the airplane window and in a hurry leave it slightly rotated. Usually I also change the audio by the intercom headset audio at this point as well. Only then do I take it to Virb Edit to overlay the gauges. If I do it video by video the color correction analysis will be of that segment and not the whole video, so it benefits the quality this way. I learned I can simply edit the first gpx and concat the tracks section without issue of adjacent videos. Every online tool has failed to do this (gives an error when importing gpx into virb edit) so I'll be writing my own to do what I manually did. However, it was nice to be able to skip this step before. Thanks for replying though! :)

I'll also take this forum to do two feature suggestions:
    1) instead of the png frame by frame for overlay (which takes forever to export and is nearly impossible to handle afterwards), why not an option to export the full movie without the overlay PLUS the overlay track? This way we could take the movie and the overlay into another editing tool like Final Cut Pro X and merge them at will. I only use the overlay for certain parts of my movie so I end up exporting it with-and-without overlay and then cutting away the chunks I don't need. Interesting?
    2) mini map overlay. Tracks are great for some activities, but if you are flying, it's 10 times more interesting to know where you are rather than the weird lines you drew in the sky. Specially for longer trips and for touch and goes (I end up doing a LOT of circles in the same place when practicing landings). Interesting?

Another use case is to use a site like http://gps4sport.com/ where we can sync our youtube videos with gpx files and see where on the map we are while the movie is playing.

im using a garmin virb elete ......ok its seems slightly easier to use ..just but my gps isnt included in the video files ..ie the overlay gauges dont work ..i need to add the "g matrix " , so i went to add them ( this is a pain to have to do this manually when it worked fine before ) it tells me there isnt a gps device connected ??
all i wanted is to show my speed and altitude but theres no current gmatrix files only old ones from videos 3 weeks ago ?? is this something im doing wrong or is it broke before its released

Videos imported from an Elite should automatically get the G-Metrix pulled in. Did you import directly from the camera, or did you copy the files to your hard drive first?

Are your final edited videos both continuous and chronological? In other words, do any of your edits jump forward or backward in time? That could be problematic for gpx export, but we're investigating ways to make things easier for you. If you have any example videos posted on the web, it might help us better understand what you're going for.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed on my side it's chronological. I don't have any public ones but I use them for training and I don't jump in time ever. If I do a jump in time in final cut pro, the gpx would still have done its job by matching the treated and corrected version of the assembled video-parts. Right now manual concatenation is working. Only hassle is for me to export the video twice from the virb edit and going twice to final cut pro. One without overlays. (then fix the video's color and angle ion FCP) Re-import to virb edit with a gpx to match full length. Export with overlays. Go back to final cut pro: crop and cut till overlays are only in interesting bits. An export option for video/separate overlay transparent layer for me is the best. One export only. No playing with gpx. Go to final cut pro once only, correct and rotate the raw video, and merge with overlay layer by setting transparency. Perfect! full gpx is still great for those sites that show you where you are on the video though.

And the reason transparent .pngs don't work for you just comes down to export time and the massive pile of images? I ask because FCP and other pro editors should handle the .png sequence really well. I want to make sure there isn't something else going on there.

Indeed. If I select the option with transparent pngs I still get the overlay in the video which requires me to do two exports anyway. One with the option off, and one with the option on, leaving me with an extra video the second time which I don't need. For every 1:30mins of video exportation it takes 2:30mins to export pngs. My videos are always two hours long, which is just incredibly slow. Even more so if you need to do it twice. Finally (using the video that measured the above), my exported video from virb edit is 53Mb and the png folder is 90Mb. I do understand why, but for a two hour video, you can see why that can quickly be a problem. Having the option to do an export with video (NO overlay) + pngs is already something and would already avoid the second export. Although time-wise... I think the overlay graphics are being calculated twice: once for the video and once for the png (I'm on a 16GB ram, recent 1TB SSD samsung pro, and a 3.2Gzh processor).
    Thanks for the help cvarley!
