Why don't my photos have GPS geotagging info?

I am rather surprised and disappointed to find out that photos taken on the VIRB Elite do not have GPS location included in the metadata.

What is the route to make this point to Garmin? I can't believe a GPS enabled camera doesn't geotag the photos!

Or am I missing a setting here?

Sigh,

Jeff

To my knowledge Garmin has never, in their units or computer software "geotagged" images by writing location data to EXIF metadata which is what most people mean by "geotag". Instead they link a location (waypoint/favorite) to the image. I don't know why they do it that way.

Personally I use a commercial product to geotag images when I want them to contain location data.
  • Was the GPS on when you took them? All of my VIRB Elite photos are geotagged. The EXIF data even include speed and heading if you're moving in addition to altitude, latitude, and longitude. The only reason I can think of that they're not is that you had the GPS off or it lost lock.

Just transferred a pic I took with my Garmin Monterra to my tablet. Exif file was there, including location.

I've accessed my VIRB Elite using Basecamp and it placed the pictures on the map.
    Looks like Geotagging to me.

Good to know. It seems newer model outdoor units (i.e. the Monterra--see the post above) do too.

FYI, the last time I checked, admittedly a while ago, BaseCamp did not use standard EXIF GPS data (manually inserted in my case) to position photo's on a map. PA3FBO's post implies it does now.

Thanks for all the replies. It sounds as though I should get the exif geotagging, so I will try again. Fingers crossed!

Great - it does work. I think that I was probably impatient and hadn't waited for the GPS to sort out the position from the satellites.

    Thanks for the help.

Hello, good morning. My name is Oscar Cuadrado, from Asturias, Spain

I need to buy 4 VIRB Elite, only if they have georeferencing position and orientation data in their exif logs.
Can anyone send me some high resolution photography taked with de VIRB Elite with the GPS and compass / clino sensors activated with registered correct exif?.
I am developing an application that manages such information and project that information into a database.

My personal email is [email protected]

    Thank you so much.

Here you can download a picture taken this morning.
    Size 4608x3456 pixels.
In the Win7 properties I can see it has a location attached although I don't know what to make of the hight, it's probably mm from the center of the earth.
