Virb Edit - There was an error playing the video

That's about all I know... Just got the camera today, and when I try to play a video through Virb Edit, it just says "There was an error playing the video"
I have updated the camera firmware and Virb Edit software to the latest versions...

Is there any easy fix for this, or is it just a random bug?
Thank you!

*UPDATE* Fixed! Updated my graphics card, and now Virb Edit plays videos just fine.

You don't get it do you? There is no way Garmin could possibly have every configuration and permutation of Windows systems to test on. There will be some, like yours, which are troublesome to figure out but it's not by slagging the company that you'll find the solution.

    Geomonster

Actually, I think it is YOU who does not quite 'get it'.

    1) "There is no way Garmin could possibly have every configuration and permutation of Windows systems to test on" - and this is relevant in which way, exactly? The facts are as follows (dispute them if you can):
    a) Virb Edit is written by Garmin
    b) The Virb Elite is manufactured by Garmin
    c) The firmware for the Virb Elite is also written by Garmin
    d) We have a situation where files created by a Garmin device cannot be *read* by software written by the creator of said device. That's like a car manufacturer producing a gearbox which is incompatible with their own engines (but only in some random cars produced)!!

We're talking about the simple PLAYING of a video here; it's NOT rocket-science!! If we were talking about doing something never-before attempted in the computing world, I could accept that there would be the odd hiccup. Sadly, the simple playing of a video file is (or at least, *SHOULD* be) child's play to even the most-novice and inexperienced programmer. The videos created by the Virb Elite can be read (and played) by EVERY SINGLE OTHER VIDEO PLAYER I HAVE INSTALLED ON MY COMPUTER!! Yet, when using Garmins own software, they are 'unplayable'.
Please explain - what is the most-likely explanation of this? That my computer suddenly (and inexplicably) develops a problem (as if by magic; suspending the very laws of computing) ONLY when using Garmin software to play it's own video files - or that the Garmin software is not written well enough; that it is not robust enough (and does not have enough self-correcting procedures) built in to it? Would you really have me believe that (for example) an invisible pixie interferes with the workings of my computer - but only when I'm using Garmin software to play Garmin videos? Which is the more-plausible explanation? Do tell....

    2) "There will be some, like yours, which are troublesome to figure out..."

Here you seem to be implying that somehow, it is my computer which is at fault (as opposed to the Garmin software). Let's explore this idea a bit further.
The first logical thing to do would be to determine the yardstick by which computer performance, or applicability for a certain task, can be measured. This yardstick would be a list of 'minimum specifications' for the computer in question (if you disagree, please provide your own yardstick). And these minimum specifications are listed where, exactly? Please provide a link - seriously: I had a thorough look around the Garmin site, and I couldn't find them. Of course, it's entirely within the bounds of reason that I missed them - so this is your chance to validate your insinuation that my computer is somehow not up to scratch. Just provide the link to the minimum specifications required to run Gamin Virb Edit. If my computer (the main components of which I've already specified earlier in this thread - so, no cheating from me!) don't measure up, I'll happily concede defeat on this matter. In the interests of fairness, how much time should I allow you for this?

    3) "...it's not by slagging the company that you'll find the solution"

I take this to mean that instead of voicing my discontent, you think that I should just keep quiet? Or that, if I don't point out the problems I am facing with their software, they will solve themselves somehow - by magic, perhaps? Telepathy? Coincidence? Some other method? How long exactly am I expected to just patiently wait until by some miracle the software does what it is advertised to do on my computer (a computer which is completely 'normal' in today's world, I might add)? Besides the lack of minimum system requirements I mentioned above, I don't remember seeing any small-print detailing the conditions under which the software will NOT run properly - perhaps you can point me to this as well?

In the absence of 1) the minimum specifications and 2) the 'small print' detailed above, your claim that my computer is at fault is baseless, without justification and completely devoid of any merit whatsoever.

I have paid my *hard earned* money for this device - I have purchased the *RIGHT* to complain when it does not live up to expectations - *especially* when those expectations are based on advertising from the manufacturer! And don't you (or anyone else) forget it!!

And by the way, your attitude to the users here - that I perceive as being something akin to, "Well, it plays fine on MY computer - it must be YOUR fault!" - is not exactly helpful. I would suggest that, if you're not going to attempt to be helpful, that you not reply to complaints at all......

Here is a link to the shortest video (7.5Mb) I could find in my collection (http://dl.fisier.ro/files/dn21b3kk7mf3kk8/virb0022.mp4.html
); I've uploaded it in the (vain?) hope that someone from Garmin will take a look at it and try to understand what the problem is (this is an example of being concretely helpful - I don't recall you asking for any such examples, or logs of the application). The site is Romanian (I happen to live here). To download the video (which is DIRECT from my Virb Elite), click on the button labelled 'Descarca', and follow the normal download prompts for your computer.
I cannot find any logs in the folder suggested in this post: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?74042-VIRB-Edit-does-not-export-my-videos-What-do-I-do
Unfortunately for me, there is no such file in the folder specified (C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Temp\VirbEdit\{Latest Version of VIRB Edit}). If you have any further suggestions on how to resolve this problem (both for me AND the other users here who also report this problem), or you require further information - I'm all ears....

[Hint] The first thing to do when trying to solve a problem is to gather information about the problem. It is NOT trying to blame the reporter of the problem for the problem. If you're not prepared to do this, then why are you here at all?

I am very sorry that you are experiencing these issues. We do take them very seriously.

We are working on version 2.6 and are hoping to improve matters significantly. If you still have issues with 2.6 I will be more than happy to take a look at your files and see what might be going on with your machine.

Unfortunately I cannot provide a release date estimate for 2.6.

I'm not "blaming the reporter". I'm saying that your attitude is not conducive to getting the results you want. You ridicule Garmin for adding elements to a program which does work for many people. How is that supposed to help anything?

Garmin has a history of adding unannounced fixes in many of their updates. Have you actually tried 2.5.1?

    @Falagar

Thank you for your concern (and offer of actual assistance in case Version 2.6 does not address my issues). Please be advised that the link I posted above will expire in about 10 days. Should it be required - and the link no longer work - please advise me, and I will gladly upload the video again. I have activated 'extra logging' in Virb Edit - where is this log actually written? I could not find anything that looks like a Virb log on my computer.

I appreciate the fact that I am probably in the minority as far as my issue is concerned. But I also do not appreciate paying several hundred dollars to become a beta-tester of software. I am VERY disappointed that the software is not performing as advertised on my computer - as anyone who has saved up money to buy something expensive should be able to appreciate.

I accept that you cannot give a release date on Version 2.6 - but are we talking days, weeks or months?

Is there anything else you can suggest I check or try, to try to resolve this problem on my machine?

    @Geomonster

You're STILL concentrating on my attitude, when you SHOULD be concentrating on my problem. The latter would be helpful; the former is NOT. In *every other situation* where people have purchased products that do not live up to the claims of their manufacturers, these people legitimately complain. What reason/s can you give for wanting to make an exception to this in Garmin's favour?

Your last post was #37 in this thread - and this is the FIRST time you've suggested anything actually helpful: to try Version 2.5.1.
As it happens, I have installed it - and it did not solve the problem.

Still waiting for the official list of minimum system requirements for running Virb Edit.....

Still waiting for the official list of minimum system requirements for running Virb Edit.....

    as quoted here

Windows 7 or later is required.
.NET framework 4.5 is required. A current version of .NET will be installed if needed.

    Minimum system requirements:
"Windows 7 or later is required.
.NET framework 4.5 is required. A current version of .NET will be installed if needed."

Those are the ONLY minimum system requirements?
    No minimum system RAM requirements?
No minimum hard drive space requirements?
    No minimum processor requirements?
    No minimum graphics card requirements?
No minimum graphics card RAM requirements?

Good! That means that my computer is *perfectly* able to run Virb Edit - so let's hear NO MORE about how the problem might be my computer! Not even by insinuation!
  • I also made the mistake of buying this piece of crap relaying in Garmin reputation. I own a couple of Garmin watches 910xt and 410 plus an 810 and 510 and they work great. But as many of you have said, I wanted to have all the information that they promise us on the media release. What a mistake I made expending all this money in a paper weight. I would not recommend this piece of junk to nobody.
  • I have downloaded and installed Edit 2.6 beta and it has solved my issue with video playback.

I have been able to create and export a short clip to facebook.

I did have an issue adding a non-virb clip to a virb movie, but aside from that I was able to add gps data and gauges, a soundtrack, transitions (Haven't tried to couple with bike speed/cadence, hr monitor or power meters yet, but I'm hoping for the best

For my rudimentary skills, Virb Edit now appears to be working as I had hoped,

    Many thanks

anyone figured how to fix this yet? I have the latest firmware and software. It's hit or miss if the video will record. It recorded and played with no problems on yesterday's 1 1/2hr ride. Today's 1 1/2 hr ride recorded but cannot be played. I've attempted to play the videos on 3 computers one with windows xp, windows 8 and windows 8.1 but no luck.
  • Windows 10 trashed my tablet

Had an unknown version installed and everything was fine until I installed Windows 10. Lost Virb Edit during the install then decided to restore 8. When I reinstalled Virb Edit I get the error message about playing video. I have made sure the driver was up to date and it was. Also rolled it back and still got the same message. Any help would be appreciated. Using Acer tablet with full Windows 8.1 64bit. Like I said it worked fine until I was stupid enough to try Windows 10.
